Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check the 220V power supply to the valve.
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Verify that the 220V wiring is connected correctly, and is supplying power to the valve.
220V
Result:The 220V power supply is connected correctly and is supplying power to the valve.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The 220V power supply is not correct or is not supplying power to the valve.
Repair: Connect the wires correctly or troubleshoot the 220V supply to the valve.
Verify that the problem is resolved
2. Check the Settings of the Dip Switches
A. Verify that Dip Switches are set as follows:
A = down
B = up
C = up
D = up
E = down
F = up
G = not used
H = /not used
Refer to Illustration 1
Switch Positions
Result: The Dip Switches are set correctly.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The Dip Switches are not set correctly.
Repair: Set the Dip Switches correctly
Verify that the problem is resolved.
3. Check the 2 Signal Wires
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position
B. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the 8-pin valve connector and the ECM.
C. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 on the 8-pin valve connector and terminal 63 on the ECM C2 connector.
D. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 on the 8-pin valve connector and terminal 71 on the ECM C1 connector.
Resistance
Result: There were less than 10 Ohms of resistance between both pairs of connector terminals of the 8-pin valve connector and the ECM.
Reconnect the ECM connector.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: There were more than 10 Ohms of resistance between both pairs of connector terminals of the 8-pin valve connector and the ECM.
Repair: There is an open in the harness. Repair the wiring or replace the harness.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
4. Check the 4 Harness Wires
A. Use a jumper wire to create a short between terminal 5 and terminal 6 at the 8-pin valve connector
B. Use a second jumper wire to create a short between terminal 7 and terminal 8 at the 8-pin valve connector
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position
D. Monitor the diagnostic codes on Cat ET.
The engine coolant diverter valve code should reset.
Codes reset
Result: There were less than 10 Ohms of resistance between both pairs of connector terminals of the 8-pin valve connector and the ECM.
Reconnect the ECM connector.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: There were more than 10 Ohms of resistance between both pairs of connector terminals of the 8-pin valve connector and the ECM.
Repair: There is an open in the harness. Repair the wiring or replace the harness.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
5. Check the Pigtail Harness to the Valve
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position
B. Measure the individual resistance of each wire between the 8-pin valve connector and the connecting block inside the valve.
Pigtail harness
Result: There were less than 10 Ohms of resistance on each wire from the 8-pin valve connector to the connecting block.
Repair: Replace the valve.
Verify that the problem is resolved.
Result: There were more than 10 Ohms of resistance on each wire from the 8-pin valve connector to the connecting block.
Repair: There is an open in the Pigtail harness.
Repair the wiring or replace the harness
Verify that the problem is resolved. If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
