This Special Instruction outlines the basic procedure for Electronic Control Module (ECM) and Dosing Control Unit (DCU) Flashing of C2.4, C2.4, and C3.8 Engines.Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.There are two procedures to flash the ECM for the C2.4, C3.3B and C3.8 engines. When flashing a DCU, use ERt and obtain a DPK file.
As an FLS file:The engine main program software will be available as an FLS file. The software will be available in SIS under "Service Software Files" and then "Flash Files".The software will only be available when there is a product issue that requires reflashing of the Engine ECM. Minimum of Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) 2015B or later is required to flash using the FLS file.Note: For the 308E2 models, the machine speed setting must be set at "1". If the setting is not set at "1", the flashing will not occur.
As a DPK file (Most Common Method):When an ECM replacement file is required, then the Engine Reprogramming Tool (ERT) is required to flash.The file name will not be a Cat part number. The file will be specific to an Engine serial number and the Engine ECM or DCU serial number. An ECM replacement file will be required under the following situations:
An Engine ECM is replaced.
A DCU is replaced.
The flashing of the FLS file using Cat ET fails. When this failure occurs, the Engine ECM is in effect blank and Cat ET will not connect. The only method to flash the ECM is by the ERT and a DPK file.Note: If you are attempting to reflash an Engine ECM it must be a software update. Flashing over a programmed Engine ECM with an already installed DPK file, can damage the Engine ECM.Safety Section

Note: The following steps must be completed before going out to a machine and flashing using the ERT.Note: The following requirements and hardware must be met to download ERt.
A PC with a Windows Operating System (XP, Windows 7, Windows 8). Adequate RAM and hard drive memory available for installation.
Communication Adapter 3 ( 317-7485 Communication Adapter) and related cables.
Electronic Technician 2015B (or more recent) is installed.

Verify that the Caterpillar Communication Adapter 3 is at least Software Release Version 1.23.54 or later.The communication adapter software can be verified in the Cat Communications Adapter 3 Toolkit by the following procedure:
Connect the Caterpillar Communication Adapter 3 that will be used to flash the engine to the computer.
Select the "Start" menu.
Select the "All Programs" tab.
Select "Caterpillar Communication Adapter 3".
Select "Caterpillar Communication Adapter 3 Toolkit"
Confirm the Software. If the software version is lower than 1.19.50, then contact your dealers Cat ET coordinator to have the Caterpillar Communication Adapter 3 updated to the latest software version.
