Introduction
This Special Instruction describes the installation of the CAT Digital Ignition System (CDIS) on G3408 and G3412 engines. Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this information and you have understood this information.Hardware Installation
Before you remove any of the components, set the first cylinder to the top center position (compression stroke). Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of the engine rotation, which is the clockwise direction when the engine is viewed from the front. Lock the flywheel with the 0S-1619 Bolt that is provided.
Remove the 9N-5576 Fuel Pump Gear Cover and remove the 6N-2509 Cover (15). Discard the 9N-5576 Fuel Pump Gear Cover and retain the 6N-2509 Cover (15) with all the fasteners.
Remove four 5J-5576 Bolts and 7C-6287 Retainer and discard these parts.
Remove the magneto in accordance with the following list: the 4P-8904 Magneto (G3408) or the 104-4512 Magneto dual timing, (G3412) 4P-8903 Magneto or 14-4513 Magneto dual timing and the 2W-8711 Magneto Drive Shaft . Discard the magneto and the drive shaft.Note: If the alternator and the voltage regulator are used, retain the 2W-8711 Magneto Drive Shaft .
Clean the face of the housing joint with solvent. Install the 7W-1431 Magneto Drive Cover (10). Make this installation with the following components: 0S-0509 Bolt (existing fastener), 5M-2894 Washer (existing fastener), 1C-2251 Bolt , 5M-2894 Washer and 9S-8752 Nut . Apply the 3S-6252 Sealant (6) to the area of the joint face and around the bolt holes before assembly. This application will ensure that oil will not leak around the bolts.Note: Install the cover and tighten the cover within 10 minutes of the application of the sealant.
Install the following components onto the assembly: 163-6114 Adapter (5), 163-8069 Timing Disc (3) (G3408) or 163-6113 Timing Disc (G3412), 163-6115 Plate (12) and four 7K-6058 Bolts (14). Refer to Illustration 1. Ensure that the threaded hole in the disc is at the 12:00 position and that the part number faces forward. Lightly tighten the 7K-6058 Bolts (14) so that the disc may rotate.
Install the 3M-0496 Taperlock Stud into the 163-6116 Cover (11). Torque this stud to 27 4 N m (20 3 lb ft). Then install the 163-6116 Cover (11) and the 4N-1998 Gasket (4) with the fasteners that were removed in Step 2. Slide the 4F-7226 Bolt through the threaded hole (9) in the cover. Thread the bolt into the timing disc in order to hold the assembly in place. You may need to move the disc in order to lock the disc in the correct location.
Torque the four 7K-6058 Bolts (14) to 135 5 N m (100 4 lb ft) through the access hole. Remove the fastening bolt from the 163-6113 Timing Disc . Remove the pin from the flywheel. Install the 8T-6765 Pipe Plug in the 163-6116 Cover (11). Reinstall the 6N-2509 Cover (15) with the new 6N-2508 Gasket (16) .
Install the 116-6806 Sensor into the 163-6116 Cover (11) with the 4B-8407 Gasket under the locking nut. Thread the sensor into the cover until the sensor contacts the timing disc. Then turn the sensor in the counterclockwise direction to 1/2 1/10 turn in order to create an air gap of 0.71 .14 mm (0.03 0.01 inch). Hold the sensor in place and turn the locking nut until the nut and the gasket reach the face of the boss. Tighten the locking nut to 45 7 N m (33 5 lb ft).

The magneto was removed from the existing ignition wiring harness. Install the following components to this location: 160-9145 Wiring Harness (G3412), 163-8075 Wiring Harness (G3412 CSA) (Canadian Standards Association), 163-6167 Wiring Harness (G3408) and 163-6173 Wiring Harness (G3408 CSA). The other end of the harness will connect to the controller.
Attach the ring terminal for the wiring harness to the ground screw that is located top center of control cover. Perform this attachment in order to ground the case for the ignition system for the "Standard Ignition Only" position. Replace the ring terminal for the magneto ground on the existing ignition harness with the Deutsch connector. Insert the wire into the number one pin of the Deutsch connector. Join this connector to the Deutsch connector on the new wiring harness. The following components make up the connector: 3E-3364 Receptacle , 3E-3365 Wedge , 8T-8729 Connector Pin and 8T-8737 Seal Plug .
Connect the 163-6110 Wiring Harness to the 116-6806 Timing Sensor . The other end of the harness is connected to the controller. Use straps in order to attach the harnesses to the existing clips down the left side of the engine. CSA harnesses should be routed down the right side of the engine. Do not strap the sensing leads to the ignition wiring harness.
Mount the 163-6108 Timing Control (G3412) or mount the 163-6164 Timing Control (G3408). Mount these controls to a distance that is within 4.5 m (15 ft) of the front of the engine.Note: Do not
