Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Note:
Ensure that the engine is stopped before any servicing or repair is performed.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
The low-pressure fuel system can be pressurized for a time period after the engine has stopped operating. The operating pressure of the low-pressure fuel system can be 500 kPa (73 psi).
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any disconnected fuel system components.
Remove the Element
Note: Ensure that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is in the OFF position. Place a suitable container under the fuel filters to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel.
Install a suitable tube onto connection (3). Rotate the drain valve (2) counterclockwise. Two full turns are required.
Open the air vent screw (9) by a couple of turns. Allow the fuel to drain into the container and remove the tube.
Tighten the air vent screw (9), replace sealing ‘O’ ring as necessary.
Remove the filter bowl (4) from filter body (5). Rotate the filter bowl counterclockwise to remove the assembly.
Rotate the filter element (6) counterclockwise and remove the filter element. Clean the filter bowl.Install the Element
Locate the thread (8) in the filter element associated with the threads (7). Spin on the new filter element and tighten the drain valve (2) by hand.
Lubricate the seal on the filter element (6) with clean engine oil. Do NOT fill the filter bowl (4) with fuel before the filter assembly is installed.
Do not use a tool to install the filter assembly. Tighten the assembly by hand. Install the filter bowl (4). Turn the filter bowl clockwise until the filter bowl locks into position against the stops.
The fuel system can be primed, when the filter element has been replaced with a new filter element and the primary filter has been renewed. If necessary, turn the fuel supply valve to the ON.
Prime the fuel system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" topic (Maintenance Section) for more information.
