Information:
Introduction
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information. There have been issues with Clean Emission Module (CEM) as a result of incorrect specification of fuel used. This Special Instruction is intended to help diagnose the damage caused to the CEM by incorrect specification of fuel used. This Special Instruction is intended to help determine if a recovery of the CEM can be performed. The use of high sulfur fuel will lead to deactivation of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) allowing deposits to form and eventually blocking the DOC. Exhaust back pressure will increase as a result of the DOC being blocked and can cause the DOC substrate to move.
Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel 0.0015 percent (≤15 ppm (mg/kg)) sulfur is required by regulation for use in engines certified to nonroad Tier 4 standards (U.S. EPA Tier 4 certified) and that are equipped with exhaust aftertreatment systems. European ULSD 0.0010 percent (≤10ppm (mg/kg)) sulfur fuel is required by regulation for use in engines certified to European nonroad Stage IIIB and newer standards and are equipped with exhaust aftertreatment systems.
The use of incorrect specification of fuel may lead to the following:
Adversely impact the performance and life of aftertreatment
Reduce regeneration intervals of aftertreatment devices
Reduce engine efficiency and durability
Increased wear
Increased corrosion
Lower fuel economy
Shorten the time period between oil drain intervals (more frequent oil drain intervals)
Increase overall operating costsSafety Section
Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.
Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment. To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Removal Procedure of the Soot Antennae
Illustration 1 g06135446
Illustration 2 g06135471
Example of a damaged soot antenna
Illustration 3 g06135465
Visible obstruction with insulation material
Remove soot antenna (1) and soot antenna (2) from the CEM. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Soot Antenna - Remove and Install for the correct procedure.
Inspect soot antenna (1) and soot antenna (2) for damage. Soot antennae that are broken, damaged, or part of the soot antenna is missing, is an indication of movement of the DOC and or Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) substrates. Refer to Illustration 2.
Inspect soot antenna (2) for excessive soot accumulation. Excessive soot accumulation on the soot antenna indicates a cracked DPF.
Inspect soot antennae opening (3) in Position (W) and Position (X) on the CEM. Visible obstruction with insulation material (4) of the soot antennae openings indicates movement of the DOC and or DPF substrates.
If there are visible obstructions of insulation material (4) in soot antennae openings (3), and damage to soot antenna (1) or soot antenna (2), replacement of the CEM will be necessary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Clean Emissions Module - Remove and Install for the correct procedure. Proceed to Step 7.
If there is no visible obstruction of insulation material (4) in soot antennae openings (3) and no damage to soot antenna (1) or soot antenna (2), replacement of the CEM may not be necessary.
If the incorrect specification of fuel has been used, and the CEM is found to be serviceable or a replacement CEM has been installed, Caterpillar strongly recommends that the fuel tank is drained, fuel lines are flushed and new fuel filters are installed. Follow Step 7a through Step 7d to drain fuel tank, flush fuel lines, and install new fuel filters.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace for the correct procedure. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace for the correct procedure.
Refill system with correct specification fuel. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".
