Information:

Service the primary filter element only when the alert indicator for the intake air filter is flashing. Do not open the filter compartment unless it is time for service.
If the air filter life is drastically reduced from typical, the precleaner housing may require cleaning. Refer to the procedure in Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Air Precleaner - Clean". For additional information on extending life of the primary filter element, refer to M0065482.
Service the engine air filters with the engine stopped. Otherwise, engine damage could result.
Do not use engine air filters for longer than one year.

(A) Trigger handle grip
(B) Shaft hand grip
(C) Direction of air flow
Always grip the trigger handle with one hand and grip the shaft with the other hand when operating CAT® service tool 485-3771 in order to control the nozzle end of the tool. The operator must counteract the air jet force pushing the nozzle in a direction opposite the direction of air flow.

The application described in Steps 7 and 8 is the only Caterpillar recommended application of CAT® service tool 485-3771. Do not in any manner modify CAT® service tool 485-3771.
The 485-3771 Air Gun is now available to clean the primary engine air filter on certain D6T, D7E, and D8T Track-Type Tractors. The 485-3769 Regulator must be use with the air gun when air supply pressure is greater than 827 kPa (120 psi). The following procedure is for cleaning primary filters with the 485-3771 Air Gun.

Remove air cleaner housing cover (1).
Remove primary filter element (2) from air cleaner housing (4). Pull out to remove the element.
Mark secondary filter element (3) to show the number of times that the primary filter element has been serviced after installation of this secondary element.
Always replace the secondary filter element. Never attempt to reuse the filter by cleaning.Replace the secondary filter element at the time the primary element is serviced for the third time.
Clean the inside surface of air cleaner housing (4). Keep the secondary filter element in place while you clean the housing.
If the primary filter element has not been cleaned six times, proceed to Step 6 to inspect the primary filter element. If the primary filter element has been cleaned six times, replace the primary filter element and proceed to Step 10.
Replace both the primary and secondary filter elements when the High Air Inlet Differential Pressure warning occurs a short time after installation of a cleaned primary element.

Inspect the primary filter element (2). Look for any visible damage to the filter media on both the clean face (5) and the dirty face (7). From the dirty side of the filter media, check the bond between the filter media and the plastic filter case. The bond starts at a depth of approximately 20 mm (0.79 inch) into the media. Check the sealing surface (6) on the filter where the filter engages the air cleaner housing (4). If any damage is found, do not reuse the filter.
