Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
The correct relationship of the camshaft segments must be observed at the time of assembly. If the camshaft segments are not properly timed, serious engine damage will occur.
Illustration 1 g01529537
This Illustration shows the location of the dowels on the camshaft bearing journal. (X) Location of the single dowel in the face of the camshaft bearing journal. (Y) Location of the variable dowel in the face of the camshaft bearing journal. (Z) Locating groove.
Illustration 2 g00615517
Illustration 3 g00615537Note: The position of the single dowel in relation to the variable dowel determines the letter designation of the cam journals. The single dowel is located on the same end as the locating groove. The variable dowel is located on the end that is opposite of the locating groove. Each journal has several dowel holes on the side opposite the locating groove. There is only one dowel hole on the side of the locating groove. The letter designation of each journal gives the dowel location of that journal for the side opposite the locating groove.
Illustration 4 g00615565
This Illustration shows the letter designation of G3612 camshaft journals.
Illustration 5 g00615568
This Illustration shows the letter designation of G3616 camshaft journals.
Before assembly, check the location of the dowel and the height of each camshaft journal. The assembled height of each dowel must be 15.0 0.5 mm (0.59 0.02 inch). Note: Install the camshaft journals with the locating groove toward the front of the engine for both standard rotation engines and reverse rotation engines.Install the camshaft segments with the groove toward the front of the engine for standard rotation engines.Install the camshaft segments with the groove toward the rear of the engine for reverse rotation engines.

Apply clean engine oil to the rear camshaft bearing.
Put spacer (3) in position on shaft assembly (6). Align the dowel in the shaft assembly with the dowel hole in the camshaft segment. Install shaft assembly (6).
Install the bolts that hold the drive shaft assembly to the camshaft segment. Tighten the bolts hand tight.
Install plate assembly (7) and the bolts that hold the plate assembly in position.
Install plate (8) and the bolts on shaft assembly (6).
Illustration 7 g01530616
Put spacer (11) in position on camshaft journal (2).
Apply clean engine oil to camshaft journal (2). Install the camshaft journal in the camshaft bearing with the groove toward the front of the engine.
Install bolts (3) that hold the camshaft journal to the camshaft segment. Tighten the bolts hand tight.
Put spacer (9) and spacer (10) in position on the camshaft journals.
Install Tooling (A) on the side of the cylinder block. Note: Ensure that the groove on the camshaft segment is in the correct position for the rotation of the engine.
Attach a suitable lifting device to camshaft segment (4). The weight of camshaft segment (4) is approximately 28 kg (62 lb). Put the segment into position on Tooling (A).
Roll camshaft segment (4) into position on Tooling (A). Align the dowels at each end of the camshaft segment. Install bolts (8). Tighten the bolts hand tight.
Install the camshaft drive gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft Drive Gear - Install" for additional information.
Tighten all of the camshaft bolts to the torque in Table 2. Rotate the engine in order to tighten all of the bolts. The rolling torque must be a maximum of 22 N m (16 lb ft). The force must be applied at the rear of the camshaft.
Table 2
Bolt Size Torque
1/2 inch 135 20 N m (100 15 lb ft)
5/8 inch 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft)
Check the camshaft timing. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing Check" for additional information.
Install the camshaft inspection covers on the side of the engine. End By:
Install the valve lifters. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Lifter - Install".
