start by:a) remove valve covers
Do not let the tops of the fuel nozzles turn when the fuel lines are loosened. The nozzles will be damaged if the top of the nozzles turn in the body.
1. Use tooling (A) to loosen fuel injection line nut (1) at the fuel injection nozzles. 2. Disconnect fuel injection line nut (2) from head adapter nut (3).3. Remove adapter nut (3) and the O-ring seal.4. Move adapter (4) out of the valve cover base, and remove fuel injection line (1). 5. If necessary, remove seal (5) from fuel injection line (1). 6. Remove bolt (7) that holds clamp (6). Clamp (6) cannot be removed until fuel injection nozzle (8) is lifted 25.0 mm (1.00 in.).7. Remove fuel injection nozzle (8) with tooling (B) as follows: a. Install 6V6983 Adapter and 6V4152 Screw (9) [part of tooling (B)] into fuel injection nozzle (8). b. Install 6V6982 Tube Assembly (11) over the 6V4152 Screw. Use 2S5658 Washer and 1B2406 Nut (10) on the 6V4152 Screw to pull fuel injection nozzle (8) from the adapter. Items (10) and (11) are part of tooling (B).
A replacement of compression seal washer (13) and of carbon dam seal (12) must be made each time the fuel injection nozzle is removed. Be sure that the replacement compression seal washer (13) is the same color code and part number as the original compression seal washer. If the wrong thickness washer is used, engine damage could occur. See the Specifications section of this book for more information.
8. Remove carbon dam seal (12) and compression seal washer (13) from fuel injection nozzle (8).Install Fuel Injection Nozzles
1. Use tool (D) to clean adapter bore (1) for the fuel injection nozzle. Use a tap driver to turn tool (D). 2. Install compression seal washer (3) on fuel injection nozzle (4).3. Use tool (A) to install carbon dam seal (2) on fuel injection nozzle (4). Refer to Special Instruction SEHS7292 for the use of tooling (C). 4. Install fuel injection nozzle (4) and clamp (5) as a unit. Install the bolt through the clamp into the adapter. 5. Install O-ring seal (6) on fuel injection line (7) and put clean diesel fuel on it. 6. Install fuel injection line (7). Move adapter (8) into position in the rocker arm cover base.
Do not let the tops of the fuel nozzles turn when the fuel lines are tightened. The nozzles will be damaged if the top of the nozzles turn in the body.
7. Use tooling (B) to tighten the inner fuel line nuts to a torque of 41 7 N m (30 5 lb.ft.). 8. Put clean diesel fuel oil on O-ring seal (11). Install O-ring seal (11) and nut (10). Tighten nut (10) to a torque of 30 5 N m (22 4 lb.ft.).9. Install nut (9) for the fuel injection line, and tighten the fuel injection line nut to a torque of 41 7 N m (30 5 lb.ft.).end by:a) install valve coversb) bleed (remove) the air from the fuel system (see Testing and Adjusting)Remove And Install Fuel Injection Nozzle Adapters
start by:a) remove fuel injection nozzles (direct injection with earlier 7000 series nozzles)1. Loosen rocker arm adjustment so push rods can be separated from ball on adjusting screw.2. Mark the position of each bridge, and remove them. 3. Use tool (A) to remove nozzle adapter (1). 4. Remove O-ring seal (3) and gasket (2) from adapter (1).5. Thoroughly clean adapter (1).6. Install a new O-ring seal and gasket on the adapter.7. Put liquid soap in the bores of the cylinder head and on the seals of the fuel injection nozzle adapters.8. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the adapter.9. Inspect the bore in the cylinder head. Be sure all rust and scale have been removed and the seat for the gasket is clean.10. Install the adapters into the cylinder head. Use tool (A) and a torque wrench to tighten them to a torque of 135 5 N m (100 4 lb.ft.).11. Install the valve bridges in their original locations. Check and adjust, if necessary, valve bridge clearance. See Install Push Rods, Valve Lifters And Valve Bridges.12. Install the push rod and adjust the valves. See Install Push Rods, Valve Lifters And Valve Bridges.end by:a) install fuel injection nozzles (direct injection with earlier 7000 series nozzles)Remove And Install Fuel Injection Nozzles And Adapters
The pictures to follow show the rocker arm shaft removed. This was for better photo illustration. It is not necessary to remove the rocker arm shaft. start by:a) remove valve covers 1. Use tool (A) to disconnect fuel injection line (1) at both ends. Remove the fuel injection line from the engine.2. Use tool (B) to remove retainer (2) from the adapter.3. Remove the fuel injection nozzles with tooling (C) as follows: a. Install the 6V6983 Adapter and the 8T3199 Screw into nozzle assembly (3).b. Install the 8T3198 Tube over the 8T3199 Screw.c. Use the 1B4206 Nut on the 8T3199 Screw to pull the fuel injection nozzle from the adapter.4. Remove compression seal (4) and carbon dam seal (8) from fuel injection nozzle (3).5. Use tool (D) to remove adapter (6) from the cylinder head.6. Remove gasket (7) and seal (5) from adapter (6). The following steps are for installation of the fuel injection nozzles and adapters.7. Use tool (E) to clean the bore in adapter (6). Use an open end wrench or tap driver to turn tool (E).8. Inspect seal (5) for damage or wear. Replace the seal if necessary.9. Put washer (7) and seal (5) in position on adapter (6).10. Put liquid soap in the bores of the cylinder head and on seals (5) in the adapters.11. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of adapter (6), and install the adapter in the cylinder head assembly.12. Use tool (D), and tighten the adapter to a torque of 205 14 N m (150 10 lb.ft.).
