This Special Instruction contains a procedure for removing the main fuse and two cables from the 836H Landfill Compactor, the 834H Wheel Dozer, and the 988H Wheel Loader. The fuse and cables are replaced with a single cable. This information is applicable to the following machines:

988H Wheel Loader BXY1-1240This Special Instruction also contains information for removal of a single cable between the starting motor and the alternator. The 317-1109 Cable As that is installed in this procedure is an improvement over the old single cable. This information is applicable to the following machines:

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

Remove 259-1986 Cable As (5), 264-5111 Cable As (4), and 220-7087 Fuse (Main) (2) from the machine. Refer to Illustration 1 and Illustration 2. The fuse holder is attached to a bracket. Remove the fuse holder from the bracket. Do not remove the bracket.Note: The following step applies to the following machines: BXD443-651, BTX214-337 and BXY1241-2314. If this does not describe your machine, proceed to Step 3.

Attach the cable to the starter terminal. First, assemble the battery cable to the starter terminal. Assemble the 317-1109 Cable As to the starter terminal after the battery cable. The end of the 317-1109 Cable As that has the 45 degree terminal should be attached to the starter terminal. Finally, assemble the nut and the washer to the starter terminal.
