Test Step 1. Verify the Version of Cat ETCheck the version of Cat ET. Cat ET must be the newest version.Note: If the newest version of Cat ET is not installed, communication between the ECM and the service tool may not occur. Verify the Communication Adapter and CablesRefer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools" in order to determine the correct communication adapter and cables that are used for your application.Expected Result:The correct communication adapter and cables are used.Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 3. Verify Cat ET is Configured CorrectlyCat ET must be configured correctly in order to communicate. Perform the following procedure:
Click on the "Utilities" menu.
Click on the "Preferences" menu.
Select the "Communications" tab.
Verify that "Caterpillar Communications Adapter II (Serial IP)" is selected. Note: If "Caterpillar Communications Adapter II (Serial IP)" is not an option for selection, the firmware for the communications adapter must be updated. Update the communication adapter's firmware by using the "Comm Adapter II Toolkit".
Check for any hardware that is utilizing the same port as the communications adapter. If any devices are configured to use the same port, exit or close the software programs for that device. Note: The most commonly used port is "COM 1".
Click "OK". Note: Cat ET must reconnect in order for any changes to be used. Select "Disconnect" from the tool bar if changes have been made to any of the settings for communications. Connect Cat ET. Attempt to establish communication. Observe the indicator on the communications adapter.Expected Result:The configuration for Cat ET is correct.Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 4. Verify Electrical Power to the Communications AdapterCheck the power indicator on the communications adapter. This will confirm the presence of electrical power at the unit.Expected Result:The power indicator on the communications adapter is illuminated.Results:
OK - The communications adapter is receiving power. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The communications adapter is not receiving power.Repair: The communications adapter is not receiving battery voltage. Perform the following procedure:

Power terminals at the service tool connector
(A) +Battery
(B) −Battery
Check for battery voltage at the service tool connector. If battery voltage is present at the service tool connector, verify that the cable between the service tool connector and the communication adapter is OK. Replace the cable, if necessary.Suspect a problem with the communication adapter if the following conditions are true:
There is power at the cable's "DATA LINK" connector.
The communication adapter's "POWER" indicator is not illuminated.If there is not power at the service tool connector, inspect the wiring and fuses. Determine the cause of the problem. Perform the necessary repairs.STOPTest Step 5. Inspect the Condition of the Connectors
Perform a visual inspection of the wiring to the service tool connector. Look for these problems:
Harness damage that is caused by chafing
Harness damage that is caused by excessive heat
Inspect the service tool connector. Pull on each wire that is associated with the data link. This verifies that each wire is properly attached to the terminal and that the terminal is properly inserted into the connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to harnesses, connectors, and electrical connections.Expected Result:The connectors and harnesses are OK.Results:
OK - The harness for the data link is OK.Repair: There may be a problem with the data link for the engine. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Cat Data Link - Test" or refer to Troubleshooting, "CAN Data Link - Test" for information that is related to troubleshooting these circuits.STOP
