Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
CDL Code    Code Description    Comments
E265 (1)     User Defined Shutdown     The user-defined shutdown has been activated.
The engine will shut down. The code is logged.
E265 (3)     User Defined Shutdown     The user-defined shutdown has been activated.
The engine will shut down. The code is logged.    The user-defined shutdown switch will shut down the engine. The engine ECM remains active. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be used to communicate with the ECM. The user-defined shutdown switch must be returned to the RUN position before the ECM will allow the engine to start. The ECM reads the position of the user-defined shutdown switch. If the engine is running, the ECM disables the fuel injection. The status screen will display"Injection Disabled" and "Remote Shutdown".

Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results
1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Thoroughly inspect connectors. Thoroughly inspect the connectors for the shutdown switch. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
C. Perform a
45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
D. Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
E. Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.

Inspect Connectors and Wiring.
Results: The harness and wiring are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Results: There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.

2. Check the Status of the Shutdown Switch on Cat ET
A. Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
B. Use Cat ET to verify that the engine rpm is 0.
C. Return the shutdown switch to the RUN position.
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
E. Operate the shutdown switch. Observe the status for the "Shutdown Switch" on Cat ET.

Status of Switch
Results: The status of the "Shutdown Switch" reads "ON" with the shutdown switch in the SHUTDOWN position. The status of the "Shutdown Switch" reads "OFF" when the shutdown switch is in the RUN position. The shutdown switch is operating normally.
There may be an intermittent problem. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
Results: The status of the "Shutdown Switch" does not read "ON" with the shutdown switch in the SHUTDOWN position. The status of the "Shutdown Switch" does not read "OFF" when the shutdown switch is in the RUN position. The shutdown switch is not operating normally.
Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Short the Wires together at the Shutdown Switch
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the harness from the shutdown switch.
C. Install a jumper wire between terminal 1 (switch ) and terminal 2 (switch return) at the switch connector.
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
F. Observe the status of the "Shutdown Switch" on Cat ET.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
J. Remove the short circuit at the connector for the switch.

Short Switch
Results: The status of the shutdown switch did not change states after creating the short circuit.
Repair the wiring or replace the harness.
Use Cat ET to verify that the problem is resolved.
Results: The status of the shutdown switch changed states after creating the short circuit.
Install a new shutdown switch.
Use Cat ET to verify that the problem is resolved.
