Event Code
Description Conditions which Activate the Code System Response
E401(3) Cylinder #1 Detonation The level of detonation has exceeded the trip point for engine shutdown.
Maximum retardation of the timing was unable to control the detonation adequately during the number of ignition sparks that are allowed. The code is logged.
The shutdown output is activated.
The engine is shut down.

Excessive load
Excessive inlet air pressure
High inlet air temperature
Incorrect air/fuel ratio
Incorrect base timing
Changes in the fuel quality
Incorrect timing calibration
Faulty circuit for the detonation sensor
Excessive deposits in the combustion chamber
Cylinder misfireRecommended Actions
Excessive Load
Ensure that the load is not excessive. Reduce the load. If necessary, disengage the driven equipment and test the engine.Excessive Inlet Air Pressure
The calculated engine load will increase as the inlet air pressure increases. The pressure could cause the air/fuel ratio for the engine to become lean. This condition could cause the engine to misfire on some cylinders. As the other cylinders pick up the load, detonation may occur due to the excess load. Check the setting for the turbocharger compressor bypass valve. Perform the necessary adjustments.Measure the inlet air pressure during engine operation with a load. For specific data on the engine, refer to the performance data sheet for the engine.High Inlet Air Temperature
High inlet air temperature can cause detonation. Check the inlet air temperature. Check for a restriction to the air flow through the aftercooler. Look for event codes that are related to a high inlet air temperatureRefer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Temperature Is High".Incorrect Air/Fuel Ratio
An air/fuel mixture that is too rich will cause detonation. Verify that the exhaust emissions are correct. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Air/Fuel Ratio Control - Adjust".A change in the fuel energy content will change the air/fuel ratio. Obtain a fuel analysis. If the fuel analysis is as expected, inspect the NOX sensor port in the flower pot for plugging. If necessary, clean the port. If the problem persists, refer to Troubleshooting, "Detonation Occurrence".The fuel supply pressure must be 876 to 1289 mbar absolute or 12.705 to 18.695 PSI. The gas differential pressure (delta-p) should be between 69 and 345 mbar. Delta-p below this range is allowed during cranking and idle conditions, but accuracy of the valve will be reduced. For delta-p above 276 mbar, flow accuracy will also decrease, and a reduction in valve stability may occur. Minimum proof pressure for the fuel metering valve is 0.52 bar gauge. Minimum burst pressure for the fuel metering valve is 1.72 bar gauge.Ensure that the fuel metering valve is operating correctly. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Metering Valve - Test".Incorrect Base Timing
Verify that the base timing for the engine is correct. A base timing that is advanced with a fuel that has a high BTU content can cause detonation.Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Ignition Timing - Adjust" for details.Changes in the Fuel Quality
Check for event codes that are related to fuel quality.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Energy Content Problem".Incorrect Timing Calibration
Note: Only perform this procedure if work on the engine may have affected the engine timing. Also, perform this procedure if the engine speed/timing sensor has not been calibrated.Perform a timing calibration on the engine. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Timing - Calibrate".Faulty Circuit for the Detonation Sensor
Check for active diagnostic codes or logged diagnostic codes that are related to the circuit for the detonation sensors. Troubleshoot the circuit for the detonation sensors, if necessary. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Detonation - Test".Excessive Deposits in the Combustion Chamber
Overfilling of engine oil can lead to deposits. Make sure that the engine oil level is correct.Note: Excessive deposits contribute to guttering of the valves.Use a borescope to inspect the cylinders. Look for the following conditions:
Deposits on the valve seats
Deposits on the valve faces
Deposits on the cylinder walls that are above the upper limit of the piston stroke
Signs of internal leaksSigns of internal leaks include excessive consumption of engine oil, blue smoke, and excessive detonation. If excessive deposits and/or signs of internal leaks are found, investigate the cause of the condition. Make repairs, as needed.Perform an oil analysis on the engine oil for the engine. Check the analysis result for the correct level of sulfated ash content. Levels of ash that are higher than recommended can lead to buildup of deposits.Cylinder Misfire
Cylinder misfire can lead to detonation for an engine that is heavily loaded. If a cylinder has misfire, the ECM increases fuel delivery to the other cylinders in order to compensate. If the engine is heavily loaded, the load can cause detonation to occur.
