Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
There have been some isolated instances of issues with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on certain C3.4B engines.Solution
Caterpillar is aware of this problem. Follow the procedure that is detailed below.

A 233-7191 Hose Cleaner Gp 1
Obtain a fuel sample from the engine.
Obtain a lubricating oil sample from the engine.
Attach a copy of the full service history of the engine to the Service Information Systems (SIMSi) report. Include the change history of the following components:
Engine oil
Engine oil filter
Engine fuel filter
Crankcase breather filter
Ensure that the breather element is clean and free from wear or damage. Replace the breather element. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Engine Crankcase Breather Element - Replace for the correct procedure. Ensure that the inlet hose is clean and free from restriction. If the inlet hose requires replacing, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Crankcase Breather - Install for the correct procedure.
Determine the service hours of the engine air cleaner element. Ensure that the engine air cleaner element is clean and free from wear, damage, or restriction. If necessary, replace the engine air cleaner element. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Engine Air Cleaner Element (Single Element) - Inspect/Clean/Replace for the correct procedure. Ensure that the hose assemblies are clean and free from restriction and dust.
Inspect the inlet and outlet hoses of the turbocharger for the presence of excessive lubricating oil. If necessary, take photographs inside both inlet and outlet hoses. If necessary, take photographs inside the compressor housing for the inlet and outlet. If excessive lubricating oil is found, replace the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Turbocharger - Remove and Disassembly and Assembly, Turbocharger - Install for the correct procedures.Note: Ensure that all hoses are clean and free from wear, damage, or restriction before the hoses are installed. If necessary, replace the hoses.
Remove the exhaust pipe from the turbocharger outlet. Inspect the turbine housing and exhaust pipe for traces of oil.
Check for the correct operation of the exhaust gas pressure sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, Sensor Signal (Analog, Active) - Test (Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensor) for the correct procedure.
Remove the tube assembly for the exhaust gas pressure sensor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Pressure Sensor (Exhaust Back Pressure) - Remove and Install for the correct procedure. Use Tooling (A) to send a projectile through the insideof the tube assembly. Collect the projectile in a suitable, clean container. Send the projectile to a laboratory for analysis.Note: Ensure that the tube assembly is clean and free from wear, damage, or restriction before the tube assembly is installed. If necessary, replace the tube assembly.
Check for the correct operation of the exhaust gas pressure sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, Sensor Signal (Analog, Active) - Test for the correct procedure.
Remove the tube assemblies for the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Pressure Sensor (DPF) - Remove and Install for the correct procedure. Use Tooling (A) to send a projectile through the inside of the tube assemblies. Collect the projectile in a suitable, clean container. Send the projectile to a laboratory for analysis.Note: Ensure that all tube assemblies are clean and free from wear, damage, or restriction before the tube assemblies are installed. If necessary, replace the tube assemblies.
Remove the flexible exhaust pipe at the connection between the flexible exhaust pipe and the DPF. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Flexible Exhaust Pipe - Remove and Install for the correct procedure.
Inspect the inlet and exhaust of the DPF for the presence of oil residue and debris. If oil residue or debris is present. replace the DPF. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Diesel Particulate Filter - Remove and Disassembly and Assembly, Diesel Particulate Filter - Install for the correct procedures.Note: If the flexible exhaust pipe was removed as an assembly, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Flexible Exhaust Pipe - Remove and Install for the correct installation procedure.
If the DPF has been replaced, replace the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Troubleshooting, ECM - Replace for the correct procedures. Ensure that the replacement ECM has the latest flash file installed. Refer to Troubleshooting, ECM Software - Install for the correct procedure.
Return the components that have been replaced using the Send It Back (SIB) process.
