Information:

Wiggle Test –The Wiggle Test allows you to monitor the status of the signals from the sensors. For additional information regarding the Wiggle Test, refer to the documentation that accompanies the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) software.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
B. Connect the electronic service tool to the diagnostic connector.
C. Make a note of any active diagnostic codes.
Codes
Result: Diagnostic code 1443-3, 1443-4 or 1442-4 diagnostic code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result:Diagnostic code 1442-3 is active.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result:A 1442-5 diagnostic code is active or logged.
Proceed to test Step 4.
Result: A 1442-2 or 1442-12 diagnostic code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
2. Check for a Short to Battery Positive or Short to Ground
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Unplug the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Observe status of active diagnostic code 1443-3, 1443-4, or 1442-4.
Codes
Result: Diagnostic code 1443-3 remains active.
Repair: There is a short to a positive voltage on the high side supply wire in between the engine ECM and the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid. Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Result:Diagnostic code 1443-3 is no longer active and is now logged.
Repair: The engine fuel valve solenoid was shorted to a positive power source. Replace the engine fuel valve solenoid.
Result: Diagnostic code 1443-4 remains active.
Repair: There is a short to ground on the high side supply wire in between the engine ECM and the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid. Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Result: Diagnostic code 1443-4 is no longer active and is now logged.
Repair: The engine fuel valve solenoid was shorted to ground. Replace the engine fuel valve solenoid.
Result: Diagnostic code 1442-4 is no longer active. Diagnostic code 1442-5 is now active.
Repair: The engine fuel valve solenoid was shorted to ground. Replace the engine fuel valve solenoid.
Result: Diagnostic code 1442-4 remained active with the engine fuel valve solenoid disconnected.
Repair: There is a short to ground on the low side (return) wire in between the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid and the ECM. Repair or replace the wiring harness.
3. Check for a Short to a Battery Positive Voltage Source
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Unplug the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position
D. Use a multi-meter to measure for a positive voltage between the following locations:
Terminal 2 of the engine fuel valve solenoid connector and engine ground.
Voltage
Result: Battery voltage was measured between Terminal 2 of the engine fuel valve solenoid connector and engine ground.
Repair: There is a short to a positive voltage source on the low side (return) wire in between the engine fuel valve solenoid connector terminal 2 and the engine ECM. Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Result: Battery voltage is not present on the low side (return) wire with the solenoid disconnected. The engine fuel valve solenoid is internally shorted to a power source.
Repair: Replace the engine fuel valve solenoid.
4. Check for an Open Circuit
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid.
C. Install a jumper wire to create a short circuit between terminals 1 and 2 on the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid
D. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Codes
Result: Diagnostic code 1442-5 is now logged and 1443-4 is now active.
Repair: Replace the engine fuel valve solenoid.
Result: Diagnostic code 1442-5 remains active with the jumper wire in place.
Repair: There is an open circuit on the low side (return) wire in between the connector for the engine fuel valve solenoid and the engine ECM.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness.
5. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
A. Visually inspect the wiring and connectors on the high side supply to the engine fuel valve solenoid.
Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Result: No loose connections or visual issues were observed for the engine fuel valve solenoid circuit.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: A loose connection or damaged wire was found.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness.
6. Perform the Wiggle Test
Note: Carefully following this procedure is the best way to identify the root cause of an intermittent problem.
A. Connect Cat ET.
B.Use CAT ET to perform the following test:
"Wiggle Test"
C. Slowly wiggle the wiring and the connectors between the P2 connector and the sensor. Pay particular attention to the wiring near each connector. Be sure to wiggle all of the wiring.
As you wiggle the wiring look for these problems:
• Loose connectors or damaged connectors
• Moisture on the connectors or the wiring
• Damaged that is caused by excessive heat
• Damage that is caused by chafing
• Improper routing of wiring
• Damaged insulation
Wiggle Test
Result: The wiring failed the Wiggle Test.
Repair: There is a problem with the wiring harness. Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The wiring passed the Wiggle Test.
Repair: The problem may be intermittent. Inspect the wiring harness. Refer to Troubleshooting, Electrical Connectors - Inspect, for additional information.
If the wiring looks OK, perform the following procedure:
1. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
2. Disconnect the connectors. Carefully inspect the terminals for proper installation. Make sure that each terminal is clean and dry.
3. Insert a pin into each socket. Verify that each socket grips the pin firmly. Repair any problems.
4. Connect all connectors.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
