Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Codes
Result: A 4374-5 or 3118-5 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 4374-6 or 3118-6 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: A 4337-5 or 3096-5 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: A 4337-6 or 3096-6 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: A 4334-3 or 3090-3 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: A 4334-4 or 3090-4 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: A 4376-5, 3862-5/ 3862-14, or 4376-14 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result: A 4376-6 or 3862-6 is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 11.
2. Create a Short at the DEF Pump Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Disconnect the 12-pin connector on the DEF pump. Verify that the connector is free of debris and corrosion.
C. Connect a 398-5056 Probe to the following pins:
- Pin-9 (Pump PWM Supply)
- Pin-8 (Pump PWM Return)
D. Connect a jumper wire between the two probes.
Note: The probes are used to prevent damage to the DEF pump connector.
E. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
F. Monitor Cat ET for an active -6 code for the DEF Pump Motor Speed.
G. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
Short Circuit
Result: A -5 code became active. The jumper wire was not detected, there is an open circuit in the wiring between the DEF pump and ECM.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors and/or wiring as necessary. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
Result: A -6 code became active. The wiring is OK.
Repair: Replace the DEF pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Pump - Remove and Install. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
3. Create an Open at the DEF Pump Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Disconnect the 12-pin connector on the DEF pump. Verify that the connector is free of debris and corrosion.
C. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
D. Monitor Cat ET for an active -5 code for the DEF Pump Motor Speed.
E. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
Open Circuit
Result: A -5 code became active. The wiring is OK.
Repair: Replace the DEF pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Pump - Remove and Install. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
Result: A -5 code did not become active. The ECM did not detect the open circuit. There is a short circuit in the wiring between the DEF pump and the ECM.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors and/or wiring as necessary. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
4. Check for an Open in the DEF Pump Signal Wire
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Disconnect the 12-pin connector on the DEF pump. Verify that the connector is free of debris and corrosion.
C. Connect a 398-5056 Probe to the DEF pump connector terminal 10 (Pump PWM Signal).
D. Disconnect the engine ECM J1 connector.
E. Measure the resistance between terminal 10 of the DEF pump 12-pin connector and terminal 31 of the engine ECM J1 connector.
Open Circuit
Result: There were less than 10 Ohms of resistance on the DEF pump PWM signal wire.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: There were more than 10 Ohms of resistance on the DEF pump PWM signal wire. There is an open circuit in the harness.
