Engine Oil
Check Oil Level
1. Check the oil level. Do not check the oil level with the engine running.
If more oil than the specified "Refill Capacity" is required to reach the FULL mark, consult your GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak dealer.
2. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick. Add oil if necessary. Operating your engine when the oil level is above the FULL mark, could cause your crankshaft to dip into the oil. The crankshaft dipping into the oil could create air bubbles and could cause excessively high oil temperatures which can reduce the lubricating characteristics of the oil and lead to bearing damage. Also, a crankshaft that dips into the oil during engine operation, could result in a loss of power.Cooling System
Check Level
1. Check the coolant level with the engine stopped and cold.2. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve any pressure.Refer to the GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak Owner's Manual for cooling system maintenance procedures.Engine Compartment
Inspect the Engine
For maximum service life of your truck engine, make a thorough under the hood inspection before starting the engine. Look for such items as oil or coolant leaks, loose bolts, worn fan and accessory drive belts, loose connections and trash build-up. Remove trash build-up and have repairs made as needed.Keep a close watch for leaks. If leaking is observed, find the source and correct the leak. If leaking is suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended service intervals prescribed in this publication until a leak is found and fixed or until the suspicion for a leak has been proven to be false.Wipe all fittings, caps and plugs before servicing. 1. Inspect the water pump and multiple groove drive belt for cracks, breaks or other damage.2. Inspect the water pump for leaks. 3. Inspect the engine for oil leaks, such as front and rear seals, oil pan, oil filters and valve covers.4. Inspect the fuel system for leaks, loose fuel line clamps and fittings and loose or worn hoses.5. Inspect wiring for loose connections and worn or frayed wires.6. Inspect engine electrical grounding system for good connections and condition. GM trucks will use a starter to battery ground strap. If a starter change is made, consult an GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak dealer, who is an authorized Cat 3116 engine dealer to make sure that the proper grounding procedures are followed for that model starter.Engine Air Cleaner
Check Air Cleaner Service Indicator (If Equipped)
Typical ExampleYour engine is equipped with an air filter restriction indicator.A service indicator may be mounted in the engine compartment. A colored piston showing in the window indicates the need for servicing the air cleaner.Observe the air cleaner service indicator (if equipped). Service the air cleaner when the yellow diaphragm enters the red zone or the red piston locks in the visible position. If the air cleaner indicator shows red at any time, install a clean or new air cleaner element.Refer to the GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak Manual for more information.Air-to-Air Aftercooler
Check
Check the front of the air-to-air aftercooler on a daily basis for insects and other debris. Depending on your findings and operating environment, the service interval for cleaning the air-to-air aftercooler can be extended from a daily to an as needed basis.Water Separator (If Equipped)
Drain
Pressure Side Installation
1. Depress the spring-actuated drain valve until all water is drained.2. Release the drain valve to close the drain.
