Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Interview the Operator
A. Determine if the "Test" button was pushed.
Note: If the operator pushes the "Test" button with the engine running, the system will cycle through self test. This will trigger a false positive reading in VIMs. A level three event will be recorded, activating the error code and if the machine is in a safe state (in neutral, speed zero, engine speed low idle, or elevated low idle) VIMs will shut down the engine. If the operator pushes the "Test" button with the key on and the engine not running, a level three event will be recorded.
Operator
Result: The "Test" button was pushed.
Repair: The code was caused by the "Test" button. Return to service.
Result: The "Test" button was not pushed.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Natural Gas System for a Leak
A. Check all the fuel fittings and fuel lines for leaks.
B. Verify that the pressure relief valves are not venting or leaking.
C. Check the tank pressure.
Note: If the tank pressure is above 1586 kPa (230 psi), manually vent until tank pressure is below 1586 kPa (230 psi) and the tank is no longer venting.
Leaks
Result: The natural gas system is not leaking.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The natural gas system is leaking.
Repair: Repair or replace damaged natural gas system components.
If the relief valve is stuck, defuel the truck and replace the relief valve. If the methane gas detection system stops venting, then recheck the methane gas detection system.
If the problem is resolved, return to service.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check for Nuisance Gases in the Air
Note: Nuisance gases can be caused by cleaners, paint, polish, lacquer, gasoline, strong adhesives, fiberglass repair, and so forth.
Note: The methane detectors will lose effectivity and can alarm falsely if exposed to hydraulic oil, coolant, or are exposed to methane repeatedly.
Gases
Result: The atmosphere does not have combustible gases.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The atmosphere has combustible gases.
Repair: Do not operate the engine in an environment with the methane sensors exposed to combustible gases, nuisance gases, excessive dust, fire suppression powder, hydraulic oil, coolant, or been activated by methane repeatedly.
Replace the exposed methane detection sensor. Test the methane gas detection system with the service tool to confirm good operation
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check for a Yellow Fault Light
Note: The control panel will state if the issue is with the engine compartment methane sensor or the operator compartment methane sensor.
A. Thoroughly inspect the connectors and wiring harness to the sensor indicated. Refer to Troubleshooting, Electrical Connectors-Inspect for additional information.
B. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on the connector wires.
C. Check the harness for abrasions and pinch points.
Connectors and Wiring
Result: The connectors and wiring appear to be OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Swap Methane Sensor with another Known Good Methane Sensor
Sensor
Result: A code remained active with a known good methane sensor installed.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: A code is not active with a known good methane sensor installed.
Repair: Replace the methane sensor.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
7. Verify that the Methane Gas Detection System is Functioning Properly
A. Use the 478-9229 Tool Gp to check the methane gas detection system.
Test
Result: The methane gas detection system is functioning properly.
Return to service.
Result: The methane gas detection system is not functioning properly.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
8. Replace the Methane Detection Control Panel
Control Panel
Result: A code is not active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
9. Verify that the Methane Gas Detection System is Functioning Properly
A. Use the 478-9229 Tool Gp to check the methane gas detection system.
Test
Result: The methane gas detection system is functioning properly.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
