Information:

Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) or refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. INHALING REFRIGERANT R-12 OR REFRIGERANT R-134A THROUGH ANY SMOKING MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE, CAN GENERATE LETHAL PHOSGENE GAS AND CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS OR DEATH. ALSO, HEAT MUST NEVER BE APPLIED TO A CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5665, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
1. Open right engine access door (1).2. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664, "Air Conditioning And Heating Systems With R-134a Refrigerant" and Special Publication, NEDG5065, "Air Conditioning Tools" for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to charge the air conditioning system in any Caterpillar machine. 3. Mark and identify two wiring harnesses (7) and (8) for installation purposes. Disconnect two wiring harnesses (7) and (8) from the air conditioning compressor at the electrical connectors.4. Remove tie strap and set wiring harnesses out of the way.5. Loosen two adjusting nuts (2), and remove nut and bolt (5) and the washers that hold the air conditioning compressor to the adjusting rod. Move the air conditioning compressor towards the engine to release the tension on V-belt (3). Remove V-belt (3) from the air conditioning compressor pulley.6. Disconnect two hose assemblies (6) and (9) from the air conditioning compressor. Put protective covers on the compressor and refrigerant lines.7. Remove two bolts (4) and the washers and remove the air conditioning compressor from the mounting bracket. The following steps are for the installation of the air conditioning compressor. 8. Put the air conditioning compressor in position on the mounting bracket and install two bolts (4) and washers. DO NOT tighten bolts (4) at this time.9. Position V-belt (3) over the air conditioning compressor pulley. Install nut and bolt (5) and the washers that hold the air conditioning compressor to the adjusting rod. DO NOT tighten nut and bolt (5) at this time.10. Adjust the tension on the air conditioning compressor V-belt. For complete details on air conditioning compressor V-belt tension refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Also see the topic "Belt Tension Chart" in the 3408E &3412E Engine Specifications Module, SENR1017.11. Tighten nut and bolt (5) and the washers that hold the air conditioning compressor to the adjusting rod. Tighten two bolts (4). Tighten the two adjusting nuts (2) after the correct belt tension has been obtained.12. Connect two wiring harnesses (7) and (8) to the air conditioning compressor at the electrical connectors.13. Install tie straps that hold wiring harnesses on the air conditioning compressor as shown.14. Install new O-ring seals (not shown) on hose assemblies (6) and (9). Connect hose assemblies (6) and (9) to the air conditioning compressor. The preferred method for charging any air conditioning system is to recover the refrigerant, evacuate the system and charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. The correct charge amount of refrigerant is 3.8 kg (8.4 lb).15. Evacuate and Charge the air conditioning system.
