1. Remove the turbocharger from the engine.2. Put the turbocharger in position on tool (A). Put alignment marks on the compressor and exhaust housings as to their location on the cartridge so they can be installed in the same position.3. Remove bolts (2) and compressor housing (1). 4. Bend back the tabs on locks (5). Remove bolts (3), locks, spacers and cartridge assembly (4) from the exhaust housing. 5. Put a 9/16" socket in a vise to hold the cartridge assembly in position. Use a double universal socket to remove nut (6) from the shaft. The double universal socket will prevent a bending force on the shaft and wheel assembly.6. Remove compressor wheel (7), wheel shroud (8) and turbine wheel (9) and shaft. 7. Remove seal ring (10) from the turbine wheel and shaft assembly. 8. Put alignment marks on the cartridge and backplate assembly. Remove bolts (12), and make a separation between cartridge (11) and backplate (13). 9. Remove spring (14) from the backplate. 10. Remove bearing (15) and collar (16) as a unit from the cartridge. 11. Remove bearing (15) from collar (16). 12. Remove seal ring (17) from the collar. 13. Remove snap ring (19), bearing (18) and snap ring (20) from the cartridge housing. 14. Turn the cartridge housing over, and remove snap ring (22), bearing (21) and snap ring (23). 1. Clean all parts of the turbocharger thoroughly before they are assembled. Put clean engine oil on all parts.2. Install snap ring (1), bearing (3) and snap ring (2) in the cartridge housing. 3. Turn the cartridge housing over, and install snap ring (4), bearing (6) and snap ring (5). 4. Install seal ring (7) on collar.
Bearing (8) must be installed on the collar, with the side that has a groove, up as shown.
5. Put bearing (8) in position on collar (9). 6. Install seal ring (10) on the cartridge. Install bearing and collar assembly on the cartridge. 7. Put spring (11) in position in the backplate. 8. Fasten cartridge (12) and backplate (14) with bolts (13). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 8.5 to 10.2 N m (75 to 90 lb.in.). 9. Fill the groove in the shaft with 6V2055 High Vacuum Grease.10. Put seal ring (15) in position on the shaft assembly.
Do not put a bending force on the shaft and wheel assembly when the nut is loosened or tightened.
11. Put turbine wheel (19) and shaft in position in the 9/16" socket as shown.12. Install shroud (20), cartridge assembly (18) and compressor wheel (17) in position on the shaft.13. Install nut (16). Tighten the nut to a torque of 2 to 2.3 N m (18 to 20 lb.in.) plus an additional 110°. 14. Use tool group (B) to check the end play. End play should be 0.03 to 0.10 mm (.001 to .004 in.). 15. Put cartridge assembly in position in the turbine housing. 16. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of bolts (21). Install spacers, locks and bolts (21) that hold cartridge assembly and turbine housing. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 18.6 to 20.4 N m (164 to 180 lb.in.). Bend back the tabs on the locks against the bolts. 17. Put compressor housing in position on the cartridge assembly. 18. Put 5P3931 Anit-Seize Compound on the threads of bolts (22). Install locks and bolts (22) that hold the compressor housing to the cartridge assembly.19. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 15.3 to 18.7 N m (135 to 165 lb.in.). Bend back the tabs on the locks against the bolts.20. Install turbocharger on the engine.
