Test Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the engine control to the OFF/RESET mode.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Check the customer connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points. Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points.Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring are not OK.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 2. Check the OFF Status of the Emergency Stop Push Button (ESPB)
Pull out the ESPB in order to deactivate the push button. Some versions of the ESPB must be turned clockwise before you pull out the ESPB.
Connect the Cat ET to the service tool connector J60/P60. Start Cat ET.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Turn the engine control to the STOP mode.
Monitor the status of the emergency stop on Cat ET. Expected Result:The ESPB pulls out. The emergency stop indicates OFF on Cat ET.Results:
OK - The ESPB pulls out. The emergency stop indicates OFF on the Cat ET. Proceed to Test Step 3.
ESPB Does not pull out. - Repair: Replace the ESPB.STOP
Not OK - The ESPB pulls out. The emergency stop does not indicate OFF on Cat ET. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Check the ON Status of the ESPB
Push in the ESPB in order to activate the push button.
Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector J60/P60. Start Cat ET.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Turn the engine control to the STOP mode.
Monitor the status of the emergency stop on Cat ET. Expected Result:The emergency stop indicates ON on the Cat ET.Results:
OK - The emergency stop indicates ON.Repair: The problem may be intermittent. Check the harness and all electrical connections of the ESPB circuit. Perform the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".STOP
NOT OK - The emergency stop does not indicate ON on Cat ET. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Test the ECM
Turn the engine control to the OFF/RESET mode.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector J60/P60. Start Cat ET.
Locate a suitable jumper wire.
Connect P1-23 and P1-28 to P2-29 at ECM connector P1 and P2.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Turn the engine control to the STOP mode.
Monitor the status of the emergency stop on Cat ET.
Turn the engine control to the OFF/RESET mode.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Remove the wire jumper. Expected Result:The parameter for the emergency stop switch displays "OFF" when the jumper is installed. The parameter for the emergency stop switch displays "ON" when the jumper is removed.Results:
OK - The problem is not with the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The parameter is incorrect.Repair: Replace the ECM. Refer to the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM".STOPTest Step 5. Check the Switches and the Wiring
Disconnect connector P1 from ECM connector J1.
Activate the emergency stop switch.
Measure the resistance between P2-29 and P1-23.
Measure the resistance between P2-29 and P1-28. Expected Result:The resistance measurement indicates an open circuit.Results:
OK - The measured resistance indicates an open circuit. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - The resistance measurement does not indicate an open circuit. There is a short circuit in the emergency stop switch.Repair: Repair the switch or wiring and/or replace the switch or wiring.STOPTest Step 6. Deactivate the Emergency Shutdown Switch
Deactivate the emergency shutdown switch.
Measure the resistance between P2-29 and P1-23.
Measure the resistance between P2-29 and P1-28. Expected Result:The resistance is less than 10 Ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 10 Ohms. The emergency shutdown switch is OK.Repair: Check for any diagnostic codes.STOP
Not OK - The resistance is greater than 10 Ohms. There is an open circuit in the emergency shutdown switch.Repair: Repair the switch or wiring and/or replace the switch or wiring.STOP
