Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
Note: The status for air filter restriction is a calculated value. Before Cat ET reports the status parameters for air filter restriction, the engine must be running for 3 minutes. Cat ET will report "Conditions Not Met" for these parameters prior to this delay time.
Codes
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: One of the following codes is present:
- E583
- E584
- E587
- E588
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Check the Air Filters
A. Check the air intake system for plugged air filters or for damaged air filters. If the engine is equipped with an air intake precleaner, verify the proper operation of the air intake precleaner.
Air
filter
Result: The air filters are OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The air filters are NOT OK.
Repair: Replace the filters.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Check the Air Inlet Piping for damage or Restrictions
Piping
Result: The air inlet piping is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The air inlet piping is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair the piping or replace the piping.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
4. Ensure that the Enclosure for the Engine is Sufficiently Ventilated
Enclosure
Result: The ventilation is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The ventilation is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair the ventilation for the enclosure.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
5. Check the Compressor Inlet Pressure Sensors
A. Use Cat ET to compare the values for the following parameters while the engine is OFF:
- Atmospheric Pressure
- Turbocharger #1 Compressor Inlet Pressure (absolute)
- Turbocharger #2 Compressor Inlet Pressure (absolute)
Note: Cat ET will report the status for "Atmospheric Pressure" as the barometric pressure for the surrounding area.
Parameter
value
Result: A sensor does not read atmospheric pressure while the engine is off.
Repair: Troubleshoot the sensor circuit.
Proceed to the next step.
6. Check the Sensor Circuit Components
A. Inspect the suspected sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
Component
Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.
Repair: Replace the suspected sensor.
