Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Correct camshaft segment relationship (timing) must be observed at assembly. If the camshaft segments are out of time, serious engine damage will occur.

For the camshaft journals, fixed dowel (10) is on the same end as locating groove (11). On the other end of the journal, the location of variable dowel (12) determines the letter designation for the Journal: (P), (Q) and (R). For the locations of the letter designations, see Illustration 2 (standard) or Illustration 3 (reverse). For all engines, install the journals with the locating groove toward the front of the engine. Make sure that the location of the journal is correct for the letter designation.Note: For SAE standard rotation engines, the flywheel rotates in a counterclockwise direction. For reverse rotation, the flywheel rotates in a clockwise direction. The rotation is observed from the flywheel end of the engine.

Camshafts for SAE standard rotation engines (Y) The locating grooves for the journals are oriented toward the front of the engine (B). (Z) The locating grooves on the flanges of the camshaft segments are oriented toward the rear of the engine (A).For SAE standard rotation engines, install the camshaft segments with the locating groove toward the rear of the engine.
Illustration 3 g01214511
Camshafts for engines with reverse rotation (Y) The locating grooves for the journals are oriented toward the front of the engine (B). (Z) The locating grooves on the flanges of the camshaft segments are also oriented toward the front of the engine (B).For engines with reverse rotation, install the camshaft segments with the locating groove toward the front of the engine.
Before assembly, check the location of the dowels in the camshaft journals. Measure the height of the dowels. The assembled height of each dowel must be 15.0 0.5 mm (0.59 0.02 inch).Note: Use the following procedure if the rear journal was removed. If the rear journal was NOT removed, go to Step 8.

(X) Rear face of the cylinder block
Lubricate the rear camshaft bearing and rear camshaft journal (9) with clean engine oil.
Attach a suitable lifting device to rear camshaft journal (9). The weight of rear camshaft journal (9) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).
Place rear camshaft journal (9) into the rear camshaft bearing. Align the dowel in the rear camshaft journal with the dowel hole in the camshaft flange. Install the bolts that connect the rear camshaft journal to the camshaft flange. Tighten the bolts hand tight.
Place thrust plate (8) into position on the rear camshaft journal. Install bolts (7) for the thrust plate.
Install camshaft drive gear (6) according to the correct procedure.
Use Tooling (A) to tighten the bolts that connect rear camshaft journal (9) to the camshaft flange. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft). For installation of the remaining bolts, rotate the crankshaft in order to rotate the camshaft.

Install Tooling (B) on the side of the cylinder block.Note: Ensure that the groove on the camshaft segment is in the correct position for the rotation of the engine.
Attach a suitable lifting device to camshaft segment (3). The weight of camshaft segment (3) is approximately 30 kg (66 lb). Lift the camshaft segment onto Tooling (B). Carefully roll the camshaft segment into the cylinder block.
Align the dowel holes at each end of the camshaft segment with the dowels on the journals. Install bolts (1). Use Tooling (A) to tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 270 40 N m (200 30 lb ft).
For installation of the remaining bolts, rotate the crankshaft in order to rotate the camshaft.
Check the camshaft timing. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing".
Install the camshaft inspection covers on the side of the engine.End By: Install the valve lifters for the camshaft segments that were removed. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Lifter - Install".
