Information:
Note: Do not overcrank the engine. Overcranking the engine may cause water from the exhaust system to enter into the cylinders.Refer to the Owners Manual of the OEM for your type of controls. Use the following procedure to start the engine:
Check that all control stations are in neutral.
Place the transmission into NEUTRAL. Ensure that the seawater strainer is clear and that the seawater cock is open. If fitted ensure that the fuel supply or return valves are fully open.Note: Never attempt to crank or start the engine with any fuel valves in the closed position. Doing so could lead to fuel pump damage.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The engine maybe equipped with glow plugs to improve cold weather starting.Note: Depending on the type of instrument panel or display fitted, the operation of the glow plugs may or may not be displayed. If the instrument panel shows that the glow plugs are active, then wait until plugs have de-activated prior to cranking the engine.
Push the start button or turn the ignition switch to the START position to crank the engine. The glow plugs, if fitted, may reactivate on cranking. Do not push the throttle or hold the throttle downwards while the engine is cranked. The system will automatically provide the correct amount of fuel to start the engine. If the engine does not start after 15 to 20 seconds of cranking, release the keyswitch or button. Turn the key to the OFFposition. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes, then repeat steps 1 and 2.Note: The “Check Engine / Diagnostic” lamp may come on after the engine is started. If this occurs, the ECM has detected a problem with the system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Diagnostic Flash Code Retrieval” (Operation Section) for more information on the engine diagnostics.
Release the keyswitch to the ON or RUN position immediately after the engine starts. After the engine starts, check that the transmission is still in the NEUTRAL position. In some situations, if fitted, the glow plugs may continue to operate for a brief period.Note: Oil pressure should rise within 15 seconds after the engine starts. Do not attempt to increase engine rpm until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal pressure. If the oil pressure is not indicated on the gauge within 15 seconds, DO NOT operate the engine. STOP the engine, investigate, and correct the cause. The ECM is equipped with a function to limit the engine speed from start-up whilst the oil pressure is low. The function of the ECM is normal, and helps to protect the turbocharger from lack of oil.
Allow the engine to idle for approximately three minutes. Idle the engine until the water temperature gauge has begun to rise. Check all gauges during the warmup period. If the engine is operated with a low load, the engine will reach normal operating temperature sooner than idling the engine with no load. When the engine is idled in cold weather, increase the engine rpm to approximately 1000 to 1200rpm. Idling will warmup the engine more quickly. Do not exceed the recommended rpm to increase the speed of warmup. Limit unnecessary idle time to ten minutes.Note: Oil pressure should be in the normal range on the instrument panel. Do not apply load to the engine or increase engine rpm until the oil pressure gauge indicates at least normal pressure. Inspect the engine for leaks and/or unusual noises.Note: Oil pressure should rise within 15 seconds after the engine starts. Do not increase engine rpm until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal.
