Troubleshooting Test Step Values Results
1. Check for Associated Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
E100
Result: An associated code is present.
Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: An E100 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Low Engine Oil Level
A. Check the engine oil level.
Engine oil level
Result: The engine oil level is low.
Add engine oil.
Result: The engine oil level is not low.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
3. Engine Oil Filters
A. Replace the engine oil filters.
Filters
Result: The engine oil pressure is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The engine oil is not within specification.
4. Contaminated Engine Oil
A. Engine oil that is contaminated with another liquid will cause low engine oil pressure. High engine oil level can be an indication of contamination. Obtain an analysis of the engine oil.
Engine oil
Result: The engine oil is contaminated.
Determine the reason for contamination of the engine and make the necessary repairs.
Change the engine oil, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
Result: The engine oil is not contaminated.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
5. Incorrect Oil Viscosity
For the correct engine oil to use, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual
Viscosity
Result: The engine oil is not the correct type.
Determine the reason why the incorrect oil viscosity is in the engine.
Change the engine oil and engine oil filter.
Result: The engine oil is the correct type.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
6. Engine Oil Pressure Sensor
A. Use Cat ET to compare the reading of the engine oil pressure sensor while the engine is OFF.
Parameter Value
Result: The engine oil pressure sensor is not near zero pressure.
If reading is different from zero, refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Active) - Test"
Result: The reading of the engine oil pressure sensor is near zero pressure.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
7. Sensor Circuit Component
A. Inspect the wiring, and connectors for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
Component
Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair or replace the circuit component.
Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
8. Check the Suction Tube
A. Determine if the suction tube screen is plugged.
B. Determine if the suction tube is drawing air.
Plug or Leak
Result: The suction tube is NOT OK.
Clear the plug or fix the leak.
Result: The suction tube is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
9. Check the Oil Cooler
A. Determine if the oil cooler is plugged.
Plug
Result: The oil cooler is NOT OK.
Clear the plug.
Result: The oil cooler is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
10. Inspect Regulator and Bypass Valves
A. Inspect for the following:
- Stuck regulator valve
- Stuck bypass valve
Stuck
Result: A valve was stuck.
Free the valve or replace the valve.
Result: The valve was not stuck.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
11. Check for Worn Components
A. Check for excessive clearance for the following:
- Engine oil pump gears
- Camshaft bearings
- Crankshaft bearings
- Rocker arm to rocker arm shaft
Clearance
Result: Excessive clearance was identified for an engine component.
Repair or replace the worn components. Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines for the reusability of existing engine components.
