Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Apply electrical power to the engine.
B. Establish communication between Cat ® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
C. Look for active or logged diagnostic codes.
Diagnostic Codes
Result: An associated code is present.
Refer to the appropriate troubleshooting story.
Result: An E363, 174-0, 174-15, or 174-16 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: An E770, 3468-0, 3468-15, 3468-16 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
2. Check the Fuel Tank Level
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Inspect the fuel level to make sure that the tank level is not too low.
Fuel Level
Result: The fuel level is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The fuel level is NOT OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
3. Inspect the Fuel Cooler (If Equipped)
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Visually inspect the fuel cooler to see if there are any blockages or obstructions.
Blockages / Obstructions
Result: The fuel cooler is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The fuel cooler is NOT OK.
Repair: Remove the blockage or obstruction from the fuel cooler.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
4. Replace the Fuel Temperature Sensor
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Replace the fuel temperature sensor on the secondary filter head.
Fuel Temperature Sensor
Result: The fuel rail temperature sensor was replaced.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
5. Replace the Fuel Rail Temperature Sensor
A. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
B. Establish communication between Caterpillar ® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
C. Release the pressure in the high-pressure rail by loosening the end plug on one of the last two fuel accumulators. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, Fuel Rail Pressure - Release for instructions on how to release the pressurized fuel.
D. Verify the "Fuel Rail Pressure" is 0.0 8 MPa (0.0 1160 psi) by monitoring the "Fuel Rail Pressure" in Cat ET.
D. Replace the fuel rail temperature sensor.
Fuel Rail Temperature Sensor
Result: The fuel rail temperature sensor was replaced.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check for Codes
A. Start the engine run to operating temperature.
B. Look for active or logged diagnostic codes.
Diagnostic Codes
Result: No codes present.
Return to service.
Result: An E770, 3468-0, 3468-15, 3468-16 code is active.
Repair: A failed high-pressure fuel pump has been detected.
Note: If the pressure is not less than 5000 kPa (725 psi) (gauge) after 10 minutes, vent the pressure from the fuel system. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, Fuel Rail Pressure - Release for information.
Replace the high-pressure fuel pump. Verify that the repair resolved the issue.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
