Diagnostic Codes Table
Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
247-9 SAE J1939 Data Link : Abnormal Update Rate The Electronic Control Module (ECM) has lost all communications over the global CAN data link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
296-9 Transmission Control : Abnormal Update Rate The ECM has lost all communications to the transmission control module over the Cat Data Link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
296-14 Transmission Control : Special Instruction The ECM has lost partial communications to the transmission control module over the Cat Data Link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
533-9 Brake Control : Abnormal Update Rate The ECM has lost all communications to the brake control over the Cat Data Link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
533-14 Brake Control : Special Instruction The ECM has lost partial communications to the brake control over the Cat Data Link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
1273-9 Chassis Control Module : Abnormal Update Rate The ECM has lost all communications to the chassis control module over the Cat Data Link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
1273-14 Chassis Control Module : Special Instruction The ECM has lost partial communications to the chassis control module over the Cat Data Link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
2348-9 SAE J1939 Data Link #2 : Abnormal Update Rate The ECM has lost all communications over the local CAN data link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
2854-9 Coolant Temperature Control Module : Abnormal Update Rate The ECM has lost all communications to the temperature control module over the global CAN data link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
3050-9 Drivetrain Control : Abnormal Update Rate(1) The ECM has lost all communications to the drivetrain ECM over the CAN data link. The code is logged.
The check engine lamp is illuminated.
Low engine idle is set to 1300 rpm while this code is active.
(1) The machine throttle signal is provided to the engine ECM from the drivetrain ECM over the CAN data link. An active 3050-9 code will be accompanied by a loss of throttle control for the machine. The CAN data link is used to communicate information between the master ECM and other control modules that are on the engine. Use this procedure to troubleshoot any suspect problems with the CAN data link. This procedure verifies the integrity of the Cat Data Link between the following components:
Advisor monitor display
Brake ECM
Chassis ECM
Engine ECM
Service tool connector
Drivetrain ECM
The control modules for the Vital Information Management System (VIMS)This procedure verifies the integrity of the CAN data link between the following components:

Brake ECM
Chassis ECM
Engine ECM
Fuel control valve
Machine Security System (MSS)
Temperature control module
The control modules for the Vital Information Management System (VIMS)
Drivetrain ECM

If Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) will not communicate with the ECM, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tool Does Not Communicate" before you begin this procedure. The procedure verifies that electrical power is being supplied to the engine ECM and to the service tool connector. The data links provide a communication link between the various control modules on the application.Cat ET may display the following error message:"The version of the ECM is not recognized and the integrity of the changed parameters and displayed data is not guaranteed."If this message is displayed, the flash file in the ECM may be newer than the version of Cat ET, or the latest version of Cat ET has not been installed. Correct this condition prior to continuing with this procedure.
