520 Control Module (Generator Set) (1) Indicator for engine overcrank (2) Stop/Reset position (3) Automatic start position (4) Manual start position (5) Engine control switchBefore you start the system, perform the following checks:
The unit is adequately cooled. All the wiring to the module has a standard and a rating that is compatible with the system.
The DC power supply is fused and connected directly to the battery. The DC power supply has the correct polarity.
The emergency stop input is wired to an external normally closed switch. The switch is connected to the positive terminal of the DC power supply.Note: If the emergency stop function is not required, connect the emergency stop input to the positive terminal of the DC power supply.
In order to check the engine start sequence, the fuel solenoid must be disabled. Make a visual inspection in order to ensure that it is safe to proceed. After you perform the visual inspection, connect the battery. Turn the engine control switch (ECS) (5) to MANUAL (4). The engine start sequence will begin.
The starter will engage. The starter will operate for 10 seconds. After the starting motor has attempted to start the engine 3 times, the indicator for engine overcrank (1) will be illuminated. Turn to Stop/Reset (2) in order to reset the unit.
Restore the engine to operational status by reconnecting the fuel solenoid. Then, turn the ECS (5) to MANUAL (4). The engine should start and the starting motor should disengage automatically. If the engine does not start, then check that the engine is fully operational. Check that fuel is supplied to the engine. Also, check that the fuel solenoid is operating. The engine should now run up to operating speed. If the engine does not run up to speed and an alarm is present, check the alarm condition for validity. Also, check the input connections. The engine should continue to run for an undetermined period.
Turn the ECS (5) to AUTO (3). The engine will run for the cooling down period (30 seconds). Then, the engine will shut down. The engine should stay in the standby mode. If the engine does not stay in the standby mode, then check for a remote start signal.
Initiate a remote start by grounding the remote initiate contact. The engine start sequence will begin, and the engine will run up to the operational speed. If one of the programmable outputs has been configured for the load transfer, the generator will accept the load. If the generator does not accept the load, check the wiring to the contactor coil of the generator. Check that the warm up timer has expired.
Remove the remote start signal. The shutdown sequence will start. After a remote stop delay of 30 seconds, the load will be removed from the generator. Then, the engine will run for the cooling down period (30 seconds). After the engine cools, the engine will shut down.
All of the internal timers and all of the selections should now be adjusted to the specifications of the customer. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for recommendations.
If satisfactory operation cannot be achieved, consult your Caterpillar dealer.
