Engine Oil and Filters
Replace Oil and Oil Filters
The engine oil filter elements should be replaced at Every 92 Day FRA Inspection or 1000 Service Hours or, if the oil filter differential pressure gauge registers 170 kPa (25 psi) when the engine is running at rated speed and operating temperature.Drain the crankcase with the oil warm (but not hot) and the engine stopped.Change Oil
1. Remove the oil pan drain plug or loosen drain valve (if equipped). Allow the oil to drain.2. Clean and install drain plug to 70 14 N m (50 10 lb ft) or tighten drain valve. To drain oil from the oil filter housing: 3. Install a 1/2-14 pipe nipple in the oil filter housing drain valve (1). Attach one end of a suitable hose to the nipple. Put the other end of hose in a container to catch the oil.4. Open oil filter housing drain valve (1) by turning the square stem counterclockwise (CCW).5. Remove vent plug (2) from the side of the oil filter housing.Change filters
Possible injury can result when removing cover.Spring force will be released when cover is removed. Be prepared to hold the cover as the bolts are loosened.
6. Loosen three bolts (3) and remove the oil filter cover (4).7. Remove the three oil filter elements.8. Wipe out the oil filter housing with a clean cloth.9. Install three new filter elements.10. Inspect the oil filter cover (4) O-ring seal. Install a new seal if necessary.11. Install the oil filter cover (4). Make sure that the springs are seated properly between the elements and the cover.12. Close the filter housing drain valve (1).13. Remove the drain hose.14. If prelube pump is not available, then proceed with filling the crankcase. Refer to "Refill Capacities" and "Lubricant Specifications" in this publication for information regarding quantity and type of oil to use for the engine.15. Clean and install vent plug (2) into the filter housing.16. Crank the engine with the fuel supply line closed until 70 kPa (10 psi) oil pressure shows on the gauge. Open the fuel supply line valve.Follow the starting procedure from "Engine Starting" section in this publication. Start and run the engine. Inspect for leaks. Reduce engine speed to low idle.Follow the starting procedure from "Engine Starting" section in this publication. Start and run the engine. Inspect for leaks. Reduce engine speed to low idle. 17. Inspect and maintain oil level to the FULL mark on "ENGINE AT LOW IDLE WITH WARM OIL" side of dipstick. Stop the engine.Fuel Filters
Observe Fuel Filter Differential Pressure Gauge (If Equipped) or Fuel Filter Pop-up Indicator.
Fuel Filter Pop-up Indicator Location. The final fuel filter elements should be replaced when the fuel filter differential pressure gauge registers 105 kPa (15 psi) with the engine running at rated speed and operating temperature or the red piston in the pop-up indicator is in the locked position. The primary fuel filter (if equipped) should be cleaned each time the final fuel filter elements are changed.Replacing Final Fuel Filters
1. Stop the engine.2. Close the fuel supply line valve. 3. Install a 1/2-14 pipe nipple in the fuel filter housing drain valve (1). Attach one end of a suitable hose to the nipple. Put the other end of the hose in a container to catch the fuel.4. Open fuel filter housing drain valve (1) by turning the square stem counterclockwise (CCW).5. Remove vent plug (2) and drain the fuel filter housing.Change filters
Possible injury can result when removing cover.Spring force will be released when cover is removed. Be prepared to hold the cover as the bolts are loosened.
6. Loosen two bolts (3) and remove the fuel filter housing cover (4) from the fuel filter housing.7. Remove the five used fuel filter elements from inside the filter housing.8. Wipe all sediment from inside the filter housing.9. Install new fuel filter elements.10. Inspect the fuel filter cover (4) O-ring seal. Install new seal if necessary.11. Install the fuel filter housing cover (4). Make sure that the springs are seated properly between the elements and the cover.12. Install vent plug (2), close drain valve (1) and remove the drain hose.Clean or Replace the Primary Fuel Filter
1. Loosen bolt (1) on the filter housing and remove filter case (3).2. Remove element (2) and wash it in clean, nonflammable solvent.3. Install element (2) and case (3). Tighten bolt (1) to a torque of 18 3 lb ft (24 4 N m).4. Open fuel supply line valve.5. Prime the fuel system. See "Priming the Fuel System."Priming the Fuel System (If Equipped)
1. Open the fuel supply line valve.2. Prime the fuel system with Start/Stop switch in the OFF or STOP position. 3. Turn the fuel priming pump handle knob counterclockwise.4. Operate the fuel priming pump until the air in the fuel system has been pumped through the fuel return line to the fuel tank or until a resistance is felt.
Typical Example5. Crank the engine. Follow the starting procedure from "Engine Starting" section in this publication. Start and run the engine. Inspect for leaks. Reduce engine speed to low idle.Cooling System
Make sure you read and understand the information in the "Cooling System Specifications" section of this manual for all cooling system requirements before performing the maintenance procedure of the cooling system.
Inspect and test the cooling system with the Caterpillar 8T5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit before adding supplemental coolant additive (conditioner).Drain and flush the cooling system before the recommended maintenance interval of Two Years if:* It is heavily contaminated.* The engine overheats frequently.* Foaming is observed in the expansion (holding) tank.* The oil cooler has failed allowing oil to mix in the coolant.Add Supplemental Coolant Additive (Conditioner)
To prevent engine damage, never add coolant or additive to an overheated engine. Allow the engine to cool first. Use the Caterpillar 8T5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit to check for concentration before adding Supplemental Coolant Additive (conditioner).Add 1 L (1 U.S. qt) of Cater
