Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
105-0
105-15
105-16
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 105 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: There are no active codes.
STOP
2. Check for High Inlet Air Temperature
A. Check for a high inlet air temperature.
Temperature
Result: The inlet air temperature is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The inlet air temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the cause of the high inlet air temperature and correct the problem.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check for High Coolant Temperature
A. Check for a high coolant temperature for the engine.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Is High".
Temperature
Result: The coolant temperature is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The coolant temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the cause of the high coolant temperature and correct the problem.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check for Inlet Air Restriction
A. Check for inlet air restriction.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Is Restricted".
Note: A restriction of the inlet air can cause high cylinder temperatures.
High cylinder temperatures can cause a high coolant temperature.
Inlet restriction
Result: The inlet air is not restricted.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The inlet air is restricted.
Repair: Determine the reason for high inlet air restriction and repair.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check for Exhaust Restriction
A. Measure the exhaust restriction during engine operation with a load. For data that is specific to your engine, refer to the Technical Marketing Information (TMI).
Note: A restriction in the exhaust system can cause high cylinder temperatures.
High cylinder temperatures can cause a high coolant temperature.
Exhaust restriction
Result: The exhaust restriction measures OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: The exhaust restriction measurement is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine the reason for high exhaust restriction and repair.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check for Engine Overload
A. Determine if the engine is being overloaded.
Note: When the engine is running in the lug condition, engine rpm does not increase with an increase of fuel.
The lug condition can cause high cylinder temperatures.
High cylinder temperatures can cause a high coolant temperature.
Engine load
Result: The engine load is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The engine load is NOT OK.
Repair: Reduce engine load to an acceptable limit.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Check for a High Inlet Temperature for the Cooling Water Through the Aftercooler
A. Compare the reading to the regulated temperature.
Inlet temperature
Result: The inlet temperature is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
Result: The inlet temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Determine why the inlet temperature of the coolant is high and correct the problem.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 8.
8. Check for Insufficient Flow of Cooling Water Through the Aftercooler
A. Check the outlet temperature of the coolant for the aftercooler.
B. Compare the reading to the inlet temperature of the coolant for the aftercooler.
A high temperature differential indicates an insufficient flow rate.
Aftercooler restriction
Result: The differential temperature is OK.
Repair: Proceed to Test Step 9.
Result: The differential temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: The coolant flow is restricted. Correct the problem.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 9.
9. Check for Insufficient Flow of Air Through the Aftercooler
A. Determine the pressure differential of the inlet air across the aftercooler. For specific data, refer to the TMI for your engine.
Aftercooler restriction
Result: The pressure differential is NOT OK.
Repair: Clean the aftercooler.
