Table 1
Event Code
Description Conditions which Activate the Code System Response
E264(3) Emergency Stop Activated The engine is in the run mode or the cooldown mode and an emergency stop shutdown has been initiated. The code is logged.
The engine is shut down.
E268(3) Unexpected Engine Shutdown The engine is in the run mode or the cooldown mode and the engine speed drops below the engine's postlube engine speed.
E269(3) Customer Shutdown Requested The engine is in the run mode or the cooldown mode and a customer shutdown has been initiated. The ignition is immediately terminated when an emergency stop button is pressed. Unburned gas remains in the air inlet and exhaust system.
Unburned gas in the air inlet and exhaust system may ignite when the engine is started. Personal injury and/or property damage may result. Before starting an engine that may contain unburned gas, purge the unburned gas from the air inlet and exhaust system. Refer to the topic on purging unburned gas in the "Starting the Engine" section.
Probable Causes for an E264(3) or E269(3)
Engine shutdown event
Faulty circuit for the emergency stop or the customer shutdown
Faulty shutdown switchProbable Causes for an E268(3)
Engine overload
Faulty fuel shutoff valve
Incorrect mode switch inputs
Faulty crank terminate relay
Run relay
"Crank Terminate Speed" parameter
"Cycle Crank Time" parameter
"Engine Overcrank Time" parameter
Excessive delay time for the driven equipment
High load on engine at start-upRecommended Actions for an E264(3) or E269(3) Code
Faulty Circuit for the Emergency Stop or the Customer Shutdown
Note: The circuit for the customer shutdown switch and the emergency stop circuit must remain closed in order for the engine to run.Inspect the wiring between the shutdown switches and the connector for the ECM. Look for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to inspecting electrical connectors.Perform the following procedure to check the circuits for the emergency shutdowns:
Disconnect the P1 ECM connector.
Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the circuit through the harness: For the emergency stop switch, place the switch in the RUN position. Check the resistance between terminals P1-22 and P1-31 at the connector for the ECM. Continuity must be measured for the circuit in order for the ECM to detect normal engine operation. For the customer shutdown switch, check the resistance between terminals P1-23 and P1-31 at the connector for the ECM. Continuity must be measured for the circuit in order for the ECM to detect normal engine operation.
If either of the circuits are not continuous, locate the source of the excessive resistance in the circuit. Perform the necessary repairs. Faulty Shutdown Switch
Inspect the stop switches for evidence of damage that has been caused by vibration. Disassemble the switches. Inspect the components for looseness, for cracks, and for abrasion. Use an ohmmeter and toggle the switches in order to check for proper electrical operation.Replace any faulty components.Recommended Actions for an E268(3) Code
Engine Shutdown
Interview the operator in order to determine if the engine shutdown was intentional. Ensure that the reason for the shutdown has been corrected. Reset the control system. Resume normal operation. If the stop was accidental, reset the control system. Resume normal operation.Faulty Fuel Shutoff Valve
Troubleshoot for the following diagnostic codes:
17-5 Fuel Shutoff Valve current below normal
17-6 Fuel Shutoff Valve current above normal
17-12 Fuel Shutoff Valve failureRefer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Shutoff - Test". Make repairs, as needed.Inputs for the Mode of Operation to the ECM
Troubleshoot for the 336-2 Engine Control Switch erratic, intermittent, or incorrect.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply - Test". Make repairs, as needed.Crank Terminate Relay
Troubleshoot for the 443-3 Crank Terminate Relay voltage above normal.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Indicator Lamp - Test". Make repairs, as needed.Start Relay
Troubleshoot for the following diagnostic codes:
444-5 Starter Motor Relay current below normal
444-6 Starter Motor Relay current above normalRefer to Troubleshooting, "Starting - Test". Make repairs, as needed.Excessive Load at Start-up
Ensure that the engine is cranking at an adequate speed during starting.Check that the load is not excessive during engine starting. Reduce the load. If necessary, disengage the driven equipment and test the engine.Check for a problem with the parasitic loads that are on the engine. Check the condition of all engine driven accessories. Perform the necessary repairs.
