Information:
Walk-Around Inspection
Inspect Engine For Leaks and Loose Connections
Keep a close watch for fluid or vapor leaks. If leaking is observed, find the source and correct the leak. If leaking is suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended maintenance intervals. If the leak is found and fixed or the fluid levels remain stable then the suspicion for a leak has been proven to be unwarranted.Wipe all fittings, caps and plugs before and after performing maintenance to keep foreign contaminants out of the engine. * Make sure coolant water lines are properly clamped and tight. Check for loose fittings or leaks. Check the condition of all pipes and fittings. * Inspect air intake system piping and elbows for leaks, cracks and loose clamps, fittings and connections.* All guards must be in place. Repair or replace missing or damaged guards. * Inspect the water pump and seals for leaks. * Inspect the engine for oil leaks, such as front and rear seals, oil pan, oil filters and valve covers. * Inspect the fuel system for leaks, loose fuel line clamps and fittings and loose or worn hoses. * Check condition of gauges. Replace if cracked or cannot be calibrated.* While operating, frequently observe the engine oil pressure gauge and the water (coolant) temperature gauge.* With the engine operating at rated speed, check readings of Engine Oil Filter Differential Pressure and Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure (if equipped) gauges.
Location of Fuel Filter Pop-up Indicator. All engines are equipped with a Fuel Filter Pop-up indicator, which is located on the fuel filter housing. * Inspect air filters and filter system for rips, tears and damage.Engine Crankcase
Check Oil Level
1. Check the engine oil level gauge (dipstick) with the engine running at LOW IDLE (approximately 600 rpm). 2. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks on the "Engine At Low Idle With Oil Warm" side of the dipstick. 3. Add oil if necessary through the fill tube. Do not fill the crankcase above the FULL mark on the dipstick. Operating your engine when the oil level is above the FULL mark could cause your crankshaft to dip into the oil. If this happens, the air bubbles created from the crankshaft dipping into the oil will reduce the lubricating characteristics of your oil. Also, a crankshaft that dips into the oil during engine operation, would result in a loss of power.Caterpillar recommends remarking the dipstick for "Engine Running at Full Load" to eliminate unloading the engine and running at LOW IDLE to make an engine oil level check.Calibrate and Re-mark the Dipstick
1. Be sure the crankcase is at full capacity at LOW IDLE (approximately 600 rpm), with engine warm.2. Operate the engine at FULL LOAD and allow all systems to stabilize. Inspect instrument panel gauges to ensure all are within normal operating range.3. Remove the dipstick and mark the oil level on the dipstick opposite "Engine At Low Idle With Oil Warm".4. Label that opposite side of the dipstick "Engine Running at Full Load".5. Install the dipstick. Some locomotives are equipped with electric oil transfer pumps, some are fitted with a delay timer. This will add 38-75 liters (10-20 gallons) per activation of button. This must be closely supervised - Watch the Dipstick - Do Not Overfill.Cooling System
Perform this maintenance procedure before starting the engine, if possible.
Check Coolant Level
Typical Installation1. Remove fill cap from radiator or expansion (holding) tank to relieve pressure. Inspect the condition of cap gasket. Replace cap if necessary.
Typical Installation2. Check the position of the level in the sight gauge (if equipped). At normal operating temperature, the coolant level float should be in the upper half of the sight gauge.Maintain the coolant level to the full mark on the coolant level sight gauge. If Coolant is Low
1. Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool before adding make-up coolant solution.
Never add coolant to an overheated engine.
2. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Inspect condition of cap gasket. Replace cap if necessary.3. Maintain the coolant level to the upper half of the sight gauge. Install the fill cap. 4. Inspect piping and elbows for leaks, cracks and loose clamps, fittings and connections. Make repairs if necessary.Driven Equipment
Inspect/Check
For lubrication and maintenance requirements relating to driven equipment such as generators, blowers, compressors, and other on-board equipment, etc., refer to the OEM manufacturer's or locomotive rebuilder's recommendations.
