Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Drain the coolant only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap from the radiator slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to avoid personal injury.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin. Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
1. If equipped with the high speed oil change, install Tool (A) on male coupler (1) as shown. Drain the oil from the oil pan in a suitable container for storage or disposal. Without the high speed oil change, position a suitable container under the oil pan to contain the oil for storage or disposal. Loosen oil drain plug (3), and drain the oil from oil pan (2). The capacity of the crankcase is 68 L (18 U.S. gal). 2. Remove left hand door assemblies (4) and (5) from the engine enclosure. 3. Remove bolt (6), the washer, and left hand door assembly (7) from the engine enclosure.

Bottom of engine enclosure tube assembly4. Remove four bolts (8), the washers, and engine enclosure tube assembly (9) from rear frame assembly (10) and the engine enclosure. 5. Remove the four bolts and the washers from the engine enclosure tube assembly. Using two people remove left hand door assembly (11) from the engine enclosure. The weight of left hand door assembly (11) is 34 kg (75 lb). 6. Remove four bolts (12), the washers, two retainers (14), gasket (17) and oil tube assembly (13) from the adapter, and the valve and the inlet body. Remove retaining ring (16) and O-ring seal (15) from oil tube assembly (13). 7. Remove bolt (19), the washer, and clip (18) from tube assembly (20). 8. Remove six bolts (21) from oil cooler bonnet (22). Set guide assembly (23) aside. 9. Mark and identify six bolts (24) for installation purposes. Remove six bolts (24) and oil cooler bonnet (22) from the torque converter oil cooler. 10. Remove O-ring seal (27), gaskets (25) and (26) from oil cooler bonnet (22). 11. Remove two bolts (32) from cooler outlet elbow (31) and two bolts (30) from valve and inlet body (29). Using two people remove engine oil cooler (28), cooler outlet elbow (31), valve and inlet body (29), and the outlet tube assembly as a unit, from the engine block. 12. Remove three bolts (33) and bolt (34) from engine oil cooler (28). Remove cooler outlet elbow (31), valve and inlet body (29), and outlet tube assembly (35) as a unit, from engine oil cooler (28). 13. Remove cooler outlet elbow (31) from outlet tube assembly (35). 14. Remove O-ring seal (36) from cooler outlet elbow (31). 15. Remove outlet tube assembly (35) from valve and inlet body (29). 16. Remove two O-ring seals (36) from outlet tube assembly (35).
There is spring force against the cover. When the bolts that hold the cover in position are removed, the spring force will be released. To prevent possible personal injury, hold the cover in position as the bolts are slowly removed.
17. Remove two bolts (37), the washers, cover (38), spring (41), relief valve plunger (40), and gasket (39) from valve and inlet body (29). 18. Remove two O-ring seals (42) from valve and inlet body (29). 19. Remove adapter (43) from cooler inlet bonnet (44). 20. Remove O-ring seals (45) and (46) from adapter (43). The following steps are for the installation of the engine oil cooler.21. Make sure all components of the engine oil cooler are clean of dirt and foreign material prior to installation. Remove all gasket material from all mating surfaces of the oil engine cooler.22. Check all O-ring seals and components for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Lubricate all O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant being sealed. 23. Install O-ring seals (45) and (46) to adapter (43). 24. Install adapter (43) to cooler inlet bonnet (44). 25. Install two O-ring seals (42) to valve and inlet body (29).

26. Install gasket (39), relief valve plunger (40), spring (41), cover (38), two bolts (37), and the washers to valve and inlet body (29). 27. Install two O-ring seals (36) to outlet tube assembly (35). 28. Install outlet tube assembly (35) to valve and inlet body (29). 29. Install O-ring seal (36) to cooler outlet elbow (31). 30. Install cooler outlet elbow (31) to outlet tube assembly (35). 31. Install cooler outlet elbow (31), valve and inlet body (29), and outlet tube assembly (35) as a unit, to engine oil cooler (28).
