Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Engine Oil Level
Oil Level
Result: The engine oil level is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The engine oil level is low.
Repair: Add oil and repair any leaks.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Ensure that the Oil Viscosity is Correct
Oil Viscosity
Result: The engine oil viscosity is correct.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The engine oil viscosity is not correct.
Repair: Replace the engine oil.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check for Contaminated Engine Oil
A. Obtain an S O S oil analysis. The analysis will contribute to a better understanding of oil contamination.
Note: High engine oil level can be an indication of contamination with coolant. Engine oil that is contaminated with another liquid will cause low engine oil pressure.
Contamination
Result: The oil is not contaminated.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The oil is contaminated.
Repair: Perform the following procedure:
1. Determine the reason for any contamination of the engine oil. Repair or replace damaged components.
2. Drain the crankcase and refill the crankcase with clean engine oil.
3. Install new engine oil filters. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for additional information.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the Oil Pressure Sensors
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Use Cat ET to compare the status of the following parameters while the engine is OFF:
- "Unfiltered Oil Pressure"
- "Engine Oil Pressure"
Parameter
Result: The sensors read 0 14 kPa (0 2 psi) while the engine is off.
Proceed to the Step 7.
Result: A sensor does not read 0 14 kPa (0 2 psi) while the engine is off.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
B. Thoroughly inspect the connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors-Inspect" for additional information.
C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on the connector wires.
D. Check the harness for abrasions and pinch points.
Connectors and Wiring
Result: The connectors and/or wiring appear to be OK.
Repair: Replace the sensor.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Check the Suction Tube
A. Determine if the suction tube screen is plugged.
B. Determine if the suction tube is drawing air.
Suction Tube
Result: The suction tube is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
Result: The suction tube is NOT OK.
Repair: Clear the obstruction. Repair or replace suction tube.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 8.
8. Check the Oil Cooler for a Restriction
A. Check the inlet side of the oil cooler for debris or blockage.
Restriction
Result: There was not debris or restrictions in the oil cooler.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
Result: There was debris or restrictions in the oil cooler.
Repair: Clean or replace the oil cooler.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 9.
9. Inspect the Valves
A. Inspect the following:
- Stuck regulator valve
- Stuck relief valve
Stuck Valve
Result: A valve was not stuck.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result: A valve was stuck.
Repair: Repair or replace the valve.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 10.
10. Check for Worn Engine Components
A. Check for excessive clearance for the following:
- Oil pump gears
- Camshaft bearings
- Crankshaft bearings
- Rocker arm to rocker arm shaft
Damaged or Worn Engine Components
Result: Excessive clearance was identified for an engine component.
Repair: Replace the worn engine components.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
