E265(3) User Defined Shutdown     The input to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) for the user defined shutdown is grounded.     The injection signals from the ECM stop.    The input for the user defined shutdown can be connected to a device in the electrical system that would shut down the engine for any reason. The input must be pulled below 0.5 VDC for one second before the ECM will recognize the shutdown signal. When the input is grounded by a user defined device, the ECM will stop the signals to the injectors. This will cause the engine to stop running.Note: After resetting the user defined shutdown device, power to the ECM must be cycled after a shutdown or the engine will not start.

P1 ECM connector (P1-8) Shutdown inputTest Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove battery power from the ECM by turning the number four circuit breaker to the OFF position.

ECM (1) J1/P1 connectors (2) J2/P2 connectors
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector. Inspect all of the connectors that are associated with the circuit.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connectors that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the sensors back to the ECM.Expected Result:All connectors, pins and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring need repair.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Status of the User Defined Shutdown on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)
Connect Cat ET to the cab service tool connector.
Restore battery power to the ECM by turning the number four circuit breaker to the ON position.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Start Cat ET.
Ensure that the user defined shutdown is not activated.
Observe the status for the user defined shutdown on Cat ET.Expected Result:The status of the user defined shutdown is "OFF".Results:
OK - The status reads "OFF". The status is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The status does not read "OFF". The status is incorrect. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Create a Short at the Connector for the User Defined Shutdown
Use a wire jumper with a socket terminal at one end to short the wire for the user defined shutdown to the chassis ground. Create the short at the connector for the user defined shutdown.Expected Result:Cat ET indicates "User Shutdown ON" when the wire for the user defined shutdown is shorted to chassis ground. Results:
OK - Cat ET indicates the correct status. The shutdown feature is working properly.Repair: There may be an intermittent problem. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - Cat ET does not show the correct status. Proceed to Test Step 5.Test Step 4. Check the Harness for a Short Circuit
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove battery power from the ECM by turning the number four circuit breaker to the OFF position.
Disconnect ECM connector J1/P1.
Measure the resistance at the ECM connector between the input for the user defined shutdown P1-8 and the engine ground.Expected Result:The resistance measurement indicates an open circuit. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement indicates an open circuit. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - The resistance measurement indicates a short circuit. There is a short circuit in the harness or a user defined device is activating the shutdown feature.Repair: Repair the connectors and/or wiring or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 5. Check the Harness for an Open Circuit
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Use a wire with a socket terminal at one end. Short the wire for the user defined shutdown to the chassis ground at the connector for the user defined shutdown.
Disconnect the ECM connector J1/P1.
Measure the resistance at the ECM connector between the input for the user defined shutdown P1-8 and chassis ground.
Remove the wire short.Expected Result:The resistance measurement indicates a short circuit. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement indicates a short circuit. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - The resistance measurement indicates an open circuit. There is an open circuit in the harness.Repair: Repair the connectors and/or wiring or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 6. Check the ECM
Remove the wire from the ECM connector at P1-8.
Fabricate a jumper wire that is long enough to create a short between the ECM connector and ground. Crimp a connector socket to one end of the jumper wire.
Insert the jumper wire into the ECM connector at P1-8.
Reconnect ECM connector J1/P1. Ensure that the wire jumper is isolated from all other wires and from chassis ground.
Restore battery power to the ECM by turning the number four circuit breaker to the ON position.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Observe the status for the user defined shutdown on Cat ET.
Momentarily short the jumper wire at P1-8 to the chassis ground.
Observe the status for the user defined shutdown on Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove battery power from the ECM by turning the number four circuit breaker to the OFF position.
Remove the wire short. Reconnect ECM connector J1/P1.Expected Result:Cat ET indicates "User Shutdown ON" with the wire short in place. Cat ET indicates "User Shutdown OFF" when the wire short is removed. Results:
OK - Cat ET indicates the correct status. The feature is working properly.Repair: There may be an intermittent problem. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - Cat ET
