PROBLEM
Certain 230-1070 engine oil pans have been found with inadequate stress relief which can under certain conditions lead to cracking.
ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect all 230-1070 engine oil pans in dealer parts stock.
Inspect the engine oil pans to determine if the needle peening procedure in the attached Rework Procedure needs to be done.
Inspect the part number cast into the bottom the oil pan. Refer to the location in Image1. Oil pans with part number "230-1071" do not need to have the needle peening procedure performed.
Oil pans with part number "230-1070" may need to have the needle peening procedure performed. Next, inspect the area highlighted in Image2.
If a "HT" or "P" is found stamped in this location, then there is no need to perform the needle peening procedure.
If this area does not have a "HT" or "P" stamped in this location, then proceed with performing the needle peening procedure in the attached Rework Procedure.

SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
Submit one claim for all engine oil pans that were reworked in dealer parts stock. 2 hours is allowed for each oil pan that is reworked in dealer parts stock.
PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
Rework Procedure
Peening specific areas of the oil pan can add strength to problematic areas and increase the oil pan life. The peening process consists of using 3 mm (0.12 inch) blunted needles as shown in Image1.1.1, to move material to cover the problem areas. Pointed needles cannot be used as damage could occur to the oil pan.
All dirt, grease, oil, and paint will need to be removed prior to performing the needle peening process. The needle peener can be used to remove paint, however, all process times are not cumulative, and actual peening process time initiates after paint is removed.
Image1.1.1
The air pressure to the peener should be regulated between 186 kPa (27 psi) to 207 kPa (30 psi). The peener should not remain in one place and must be continuously moving to cover the entire area. Refer to Image1.2.1 for the correct surface texture.
Image1.2.1
Excessive air pressure will result in the following rough surface texture and must be repeened for the full amount of time to be correct. Image1.3.1 is representative of 586 kPa (85 psi) and is not beneficial, note the larger needle impingement areas.
