2. Remove tube assemblies (1) and (3).3. Remove cover (2) from the variable timing unit. 4. Remove the bolts, lock (4) and the retainer. 5. Remove gear (5). 6. Remove the bolts, lock and retainer. Remove variable timing unit (6) from the engine.Install Variable Timing Unit
1. Put variable timing unit (1) in position in the engine. Install the retainer, lock and bolts. 2. Put gear (2) in position on the variable timing unit. 3. Install the retainer, lock (3) and the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts.4. Make sure the timing pin is installed in the fuel injection pump camshaft. Turn the flywheel approximately 30° CLOCKWISE beyond the flywheel timing bolt hole. Finger tighten two of the retainer bolts and turn the flywheel COUNTERCLOCKWISE 30° and install the timing bolt in the flywheel. Tighten the drive gear bolts to a torque of 10 lb.ft. (13.6 N m). Remove the flywheel timing bolt and the fuel injection pump camshaft timing pin. Tighten the drive gear bolts in steps of 10 lb.ft. (13.6 N m) to a torque of 75 10 lb.ft. (101.7 13.6 N m).5. Turn the flywheel two complete revolutions counterclockwise (as viewed from the flywheel). Install the flywheel timing bolt and the fuel injection pump camshaft timing pin. If the timing pin can not be installed the pump timing is not correct. Loosen the drive gear and put the pump into time. For a more complete timing procedure, see ADJUSTING VARIABLE TIMING DRIVE GEAR (Timing Fuel Pump Camshaft with No. 1 Piston at Top Center (TC) Compression Position) in Testing and Adjusting. 6. Install cover (5) and tube assemblies (4) and (6).end by:a) install governorDisassemble Variable Timing Unit
start by:a) remove variable timing unit1. Remove the pins from the weights and remove weights (1).2. Remove plug (2). Turn retainer (3) with a screwdriver. Remove the retainer and spring (4).3. Pull the piston out of the shaft.4. Remove pin (5) from coupling. Turn coupling (6) clockwise and remove from the piston.5. Remove pin (7) from the nut. Remove nut (8), spring (9) and valve (10) from piston (11).Assemble Variable Timing Unit
1. Install valve, spring and nut on piston. Turn the nut until the distance (X) between bottom face of nut and piston is 1.914 .015 in. (48.62 0.38 mm). Drill a .095 .002 in. (2.41 0.05 mm) diameter hole through the nut and threaded part of piston. Install pin. 2. Install the coupling tight against the nut. Measure .156 in. (3.96 mm) from the top face of nut and put a mark on the coupling. Drill a .095 .002 in. (2.41 0.05 mm) diameter hole through the coupling and threaded portion of piston. Install the pin.3. Install the piston in the shaft assembly. Install the spring and the retainer.4. Install the plug. Tighten the plug to a torque of 75 10 lb.ft. (101.7 13.6 N m).5. Put the weights in position on shaft and install the pins. Make a mark (stake) with a punch at the pin holes in each end of the shaft to hold the pins in place. Each weight must move freely on its pin when installed.end by:a) install variable timing unit
