Table 1
J1939 Code and Description Comments
1664-11
Engine Automatic Start Failed : Other Failure Mode The code is set for any of the following conditions:
- Engine speed is detected but both the camshaft and the crankshaft speed timing sensors fail to acquire a pattern lock. A pattern lock must be acquired within two seconds of the initial crank command.
- Engine speed is not detected.
Engine speed will not be detected for any of the following conditions:
- Engine speed does not become non-zero within one second of the initial crank command.
- Starter system failure. The engine does not rotate during a crank command.
- The engine is rotating but both the camshaft and the crankshaft speed timing sensors fail to provide a signal to the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
The start attempt is then abandoned (main GSOV and quickstart strategies are disabled) and engine goes directly into the purge process.
The rationale for abandoning the start is that fuel is going into the engine with little likelihood of ever being burnt.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.
1664-31
Engine Automatic Start Failed The code is set if an unburned gas purge is commanded and engine speed is not detected.
Engine speed will not be detected for any of the following conditions:
- Engine speed does not become non-zero within one second of the initial crank command.
- Starter system failure. The engine does not rotate during a crank command.
- The engine is rotating but both the camshaft and the crankshaft speed timing sensors fail to provide a signal to the ECM.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.
1804-14
Engine Start Enable Device 2 : Special Instruction The code is set if the crank terminate speed is not reached within five seconds of the initial crank command.
The code indicates that the quickstart system is likely not meeting the NFPA 110 start time requirement of 10 seconds.
Once the code is set, the quickstart strategies are disabled and a normal start attempt is continued.
The rationale for disabling the quickstart strategies is the potential over-fueling the engine thus not allowing proper combustion to occur.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.
3554-18
Engine Ventilation Status : Low - moderate severity (2)l The code is set when an auto start failed to start. The code indicates that there is unburned fuel in the engine. An auto purge will occur on the next start attempt, or a manual purge can be performed. Probable Causes
Excessive load
Incorrect base timing
Timing pattern not locked
Fuel supply problem
Ignition system problemIf the engine does not start, a problem with the primary fuel supply or ignition system may be present. If the engine starts but does not start within the time required for anemergency standby generator set, a problem with the auxiliary fuel delivery system may be present.Recommended Repairs

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
The following will contribute to a 1664–11 diagnostic:
- Electronic Control Module (ECM) does not detect a speed signal from either of the speed/timing sensors.
- Failure of at least one timing sensors to achieve a pattern lock
The following will contribute to a 1664-11 and 1664-31 diagnostic:
- ECM does not detect a speed signal from either of the speed/timing sensors.
The following will contribute to a 1804–14 diagnostic:
- The code is set if the crank terminate speed is not reached within five seconds of the initial crank command.
- Faulted starting circuit component
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check for Excessive Load
A. Ensure that the load is not excessive. If necessary, disengage the driven equipment and test the engine.
Excessive Load
Result: No excessive load on the engine.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The engine has an excessive load.
Repair: Remedy the cause of the excessive load.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Base Timing
A. Verify that the base timing is correct. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Ignition Timing - Adjust"
Base Timing
Result: The Base Timing is correct.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The Base Timing is not correct.
Repair: Correct the Base Timing.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Verify Timing Pattern
A. Verify that the speed /timing pattern is locked. Verify by observing the primary and secondary engine speed sensor timing pattern status in CatET.
Parameters:
• "Primary Engine Speed Sensor Timing Pattern Status"
• "Secondary Engine Speed Sensor Timing Pattern Status"
Note: When checking status parameters, engine must be in a cranking state.
Note: Valid engine speed may be shown without a pattern being locked.
Speed/Timing
Result: Both the primary and the secondary speed sensor timing patterns are locked in Cat ET.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: One or more timing patterns were not locked in Cat ET.
Repair: Verify the speed/timing circuit health. Refer to Troubleshooting , Speed/Timing-Test
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the Fuel Supply
A. Make sure that fuel is supplied at a sufficient pressure that is stable. Make sure that the size of the fuel line is sufficient. Inspect the fuel system for leaks.
The following conditions can cause the engine to malfunction:
- Low fuel pressure
- High fuel pressure
- Poor fuel quality
B. Make sure that the fuel pressure is correct. When possible, interview the operator to determine if fuel quality is in question. Try to determine if the source of the fuel was changed.
Inspect the fuel system components:
- Fuel filter
- Gas pressure regulator
- Gas shutoff valve
- Fuel metering valve
Fuel
Result: The fuel supply is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: A faulty component was identified.
Repair: Repair or replace the faulty component.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the Ignition System
A. Ensure that current parts are used for the following components:
- Transformers
- Extenders
- Spark plugs
Inspect the ignition system for the following conditions:
1. Check the connection between the ignition transformer and the extender. A loose connection can cause arcing and misfires.
2. Check the connection between the extender and the spark plug for
