Information:

1. Remove five bolts and spacers (1).2. Remove cover (2). 3. Remove four bolts (3) and two guards (4). 4. Attach lifting chains and a suitable lifting device to the engine lifting brackets as shown to support the engine. The weight of the 3408 Engine is approximately 3629 kg (8000 lb). The weight of the 3412 Engine is approximately 5443 kg (12,000 lb). 5. Remove four bolts, washers and nuts (6) that hold generator (5) to the frame. 6. Support the engine and put blocks underneath the oil pan to support the engine's weight as shown. 7. Install Tool (A) to generator (5). Attach a lifting sling and a suitable lifting device to Tool (A). The generator weighs approximately 1270 kg (2800 lb). 8. Remove sixteen bolts (7) that hold generator (5) to the flywheel housing.9. Remove six bolts (8) that hold generator fan (9) to the flywheel.10. Remove generator (5) from the engine by moving the generator away from the engine. 11. Remove eight bolts (11) and shim pack (10).Install Generator
Do not start the alignment procedure until the electric set is permanently installed. If the electric set is moved to a different location, check the alignment and make any necessary corrections. Alignment between the generator and the engine must be correct to get the maximum performance and the longest life from the electric set.
Remove all dirt, burrs and paint from the contact sufaces of the generator supports and the base. All contact surfaces of the engine, the coupling and the generator must be completely clean.
Typical Example1. Install Tool (B) on the crankshaft pulley as shown. The tip of the indicator must touch the face of crankshaft pulley (12). Use a bar placed between the flywheel and the flywheel housing to push the crankshaft toward the flywheel to remove all the end play. Put the dial indicator in the "zero" position. Move the crankshaft to its forward position and make a record of the total indicator reading (TIR). The TIR is the end play of the crankshaft.
Damage to the engine and-or generator can result if the electric set is run with a shim pack that does not have the proper clearance as described in Step 2.
2. Position shim pack (10) in the bore of the flywheel housing to check for clearance before installing on generator (5). There must be clearance between the outside of the shim pack and the inside diameter of the bore in the flywheel.3. Install a full shim pack (10) on generator (5).4. Install six bolts (11) holding the shim pack to the generator. 5. Install two 5/8 -11 NC Guide Bolts in the flywheel as shown. 6. Attach Tool (A) to generator (5). Attach lifting strap to Tool (A). Attach appropriate lifting device to the lifting strap. The generator weighs 1270 kg (2800 lb).7. Install the generator. Use the guide bolts to align shim pack (10), generator fan (9) with the flywheel.8. Install four bolts (8). Remove the guidebolts and install the last two bolts (8).9. Install sixteen bolts (7) holding the generator to the flywheel housing.10. Remove Tool (A). The total thickness of shim pack (10) must not cause a reduction of crankshaft end play as measured in setp (1). 11. Use Tool (B) to check the crankshaft end play (do not use force to hold the crankshaft in position if the original crankshaft TIR is not the same. If the TIR is less than the original value, remove the generator and remove only enough shims (10) to get the original amount of end play as shown in Step 1.12. If adjustments were made to the shim pack, install the generator and again check the crankshaft end play. 13. Support the engine from the engine lifting brackets with chains and a suitable lifting device. The weight of the 3408 Engine is approximately 3629 kg (8000 lb). The weight of the 3412 Engine is approximately 5443 kg (12,000 lb).14. Remove the wood blocks from under the oil pan. 15. Install four bolts, washers and nuts (6) holding generator (5) to the frame. 16. Install two guards (4).17. Install four bolts (3). 18. Install guard (2) and five bolts, spacers and washers (1).
