A typical view of the P1 connector (harness side) pin locations. (62) Reversing fan enableTest Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connectors. Also, thoroughly inspect all of the other connectors for the circuit. Refer to service Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors for the proper torque. Refer to service Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. If applicable, perform a "Wiggle Test" by using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to identify intermittent connections.Use Cat ET in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Voltage At the Relay
Disconnect the relay connector.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Restore the electrical power to the ECM.
Check the voltage at the relay harness for the following connector pins:
Pin 1
Pin 3
Pin 5
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.Expected Result:The voltage measurement was 24 3 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage measurements were 24 3 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The voltage measurement was not 24 3 VDC at pin 1 and/or pin 3.Repair: Repair the connectors or the harness and/or replace the connectors or the harness. Ensure that all of the seals are correctly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. If applicable, perform a "Wiggle Test" by using Cat ET in order to identify intermittent connections.Use Cat ET in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOP
Not OK - The voltage measurement was not 24 3 VDC at pin 5. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check For Voltage At the Fan Reversing Solenoid
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the wire from pin 5 of the fan reversing relay.
Disconnect the harness connector for the fan reversing solenoid.
Check the continuity of the wire between pin 1 of the harness connector and the end that was disconnected from pin 5 of the fan relay.Expected Result:There is not an open in the wire. Results:
OK - There is not an open in the wire. Leave the harness disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - There is an open in the wire.Repair: There is an open circuit in the harness for the fan reversing solenoid. Repair the harness and/or replace the harness.Use Cat ET in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOPTest Step 4. Check the Fan Reversing Solenoid
Check the fan reversing solenoid for continuity between pin 1 and pin 2 of the connector for the fan reversing solenoid.Expected Result:There is not an open in the fan reversing solenoid. Results:
OK - There is not an open in the fan reversing solenoid. Return the wiring to the original configuration. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - There is an open in the fan reversing solenoid.Repair: Replace the fan reversing solenoid.Use Cat ET in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOPTest Step 5. Test the Relay in the De-energized State
Verify that the electrical power is removed from the ECM.
Verify that the battery disconnect switch is in the OFF position.
Disconnect the relay from the circuit.
Measure continuity across the following pins of the relay:
Pin 3 to pin 4
Pin 1 to pin 2
Pin 3 to pin 5Expected Result:The following results were obtained:
Pin 3 to pin 4 indicated a short circuit.
Pin 1 to pin 2 indicated some measured resistance.
Pin 3 to pin 5 indicated an open circuit. Results:
OK - Each measurement was correct. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - A measurement was incorrect.Repair: Replace the relay and retest the circuit.STOPTest Step 6. Test the Relay in the Energized State
Verify the operation of the relay in the energized state.
Apply 24 VDC across the coil of the relay.
Measure continuity across the following pins of the relay:
Pin 3 to pin 4
Pin 3 to pin 5Expected Result:The following results were obtained:
Pin 3 to pin 4 indicated an open circuit.
Pin 3 to pin 5 indicated a short circuit.Results:
OK - Each measurement was correct. Proceed to Test Step 7.
Not OK - A measurement was incorrect. Repair: Replace the relay and retest the circuit.Use Cat ET in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOPTest Step 7. Check the ECM
Remove the J1/P1 ECM connector.
Check for continuity in the wire between pin 2 of the relay and pin 62 of the J1/P1 ECM connector.Expected Result:The resistance measurement did not indicate an open circuit. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement did not indicate an open circuit.Repair: Connect a test ECM. Refer to service Troubleshooting, "ECM - Replace" and refer to service Troubleshooting, "Test ECM Mode".If the test ECM fixes the fault, reconnect the suspect ECM. If the fault returns, permanently install the new ECM.Use Cat ET in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOP
Not OK - The resistance measurement indicated an open circuit. The problem is in the wiring between the ECM and the relay.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOP
