Table 1
Event Codes
J1939 Codes and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
100-17 Engine Oil Pressure : Low - least severe (1) The engine oil pressure is below the map-based trip point and the delay time has expired. The code is logged.
100-18 Engine Oil Pressure : Low - moderate severity (2) The code is logged.
100-1 Engine Oil Pressure : Low - most severe (3) The code is logged.
The engine is shut down. If the engine shuts down due to a low oil pressure, power to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) must be cycled before restarting the engine.Probable Causes
Diagnostic codes and event codes
Engine oil level
Oil viscosity
Contaminated engine oil
Sensor problem
Sensor circuit components
Suction tube
Oil cooler
Valves
Worn componentsRecommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the event code that directed to this story is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this story.
100-1
100-17
100-18
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 100-1, 100-17, or 100-18 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Check the Engine Oil Level
Level
Result: The engine oil is not low.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The engine oil level is low.
Repair: Add engine oil in order to obtain the correct engine oil level.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.
Start the engine. Inspect the exterior of the engine for oil leaks. Repair any oil leaks.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Ensure that the Oil Viscosity is Correct
For the correct engine oil to use, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Viscosity
Result: The engine oil is of the correct type.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The engine oil is not of the correct type.
Repair: Determine the reason why incorrect oil is in the engine.
Change the engine oil and the engine oil filter
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
4. Check for Contaminated Engine Oil
A. Obtain an analysis of the engine oil.
High engine oil level can be an indication of contamination with fuel or coolant. Engine oil that is contaminated with another liquid will cause low engine oil pressure.
Contamination
Result: The oil is not contaminated.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The oil is contaminated.
Repair: Determine the reason for contamination of the engine oil and make the necessary repairs.
Change the engine oil and the engine oil filter
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
5. Check the Oil Pressure Sensors
A. Use the Cat ET to compare the readings of the following:
- Unfiltered Oil Pressure (abs)
- Engine Oil Pressure (abs) Parameter
value
Result: Both sensors read atmospheric pressure while the engine is off.
Proceed to the Step 7.
Result: A sensor does not read atmospheric pressure while the engine is off.
Repair: Troubleshoot the sensor circuit.
Proceed to the next step.
6. Sensor Circuit Component
A. Inspect the suspected sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
Component
Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.
Repair: Replace the sensor.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
7. Check the Suction Tube
A. Determing if the suction tube screen is plugged.
B. Determing if the suction tube is drawing air.
Plug
or
Leak
Result: The suction tube is OK.
Repair: Proceed to the next step.
Result: The suction tube is NOT OK.
Repair: Clear the plug or fix the leak.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
8. Check the Oil Cooler
A. Determing if the oil cooler is plugged.
Plug
Result: The oil cooler is OK.
Repair: Proceed to the next step.
Result: The oil cooler is NOT OK.
Repair: Clear the plug.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
9. Inspect Valves
A. Inspect for the following:
- Stuck regulator valve
- Stuck relief valve
Stuck
Result: A valve was not struck.
Repair: Proceed to the next step.
Result: A valve was struck.
Repair: Free the valve or replace the valve.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
10. Check for Worn Components
A. Check for excessive clearance for the following:
- Engine oil pump gears
- Camshaft bearings
- Crankshaft bearings
- Rocker arm to rocker arm shaft
Clearance
Result: Excessive clearance was identified for an engine component.
Repair: Replace the warn components.
