Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
2271-5 Engine Oil Renewal System Actuation Solenoid : Current Below Normal     The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit and/or a short to the +Battery at the output to the engine oil renewal solenoid.     The code is logged.
2271-6 Engine Oil Renewal System Actuation Solenoid : Current Above Normal     The ECM detects a short circuit to ground at the output to the engine oil renewal solenoid.
E2089 Oil Renewal System Cannot Operate     The oil renewal system cannot operate.     The code is logged.    The oil renewal system injects controlled amounts of crankcase oil into the return line for the fuel. The engine oil can then be burned as fuel. The oil renewal system extends the period between oil changes. This extended period will increase the availability of the engine. As the engine oil is burnt, new engine oil from the makeup tank is added. This leads to cleaner engine oil for a longer time. The engine ECM monitors the fuel rate for five minutes in order to determine fuel usage. Oil is injected into the return line for the fuel, based on the amount of fuel that was burned in the previous five minutes. The monitoring of the fuel usage and the injection of oil will be taking place at the same time. The oil that is injected lags behind fuel usage by five minutes. The ECM energizes the engine oil renewal solenoid which injects the engine oil into the return line for the fuel. The following engine parameters are monitored in order to enable the oil renewal system.
Coolant temperature must be above 63 °C (145 °F).
Oil filter differential pressure must be within limits.
Fuel level must not be low.
Engine oil level must not be low.
Engine speed must be between 1100 rpm and 1850 rpm.

Typical schematicTest Step 1. Check for Active Codes
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Check for any active diagnostic codes for the following engine components:
Engine coolant temperature sensor
Engine oil pressure sensor
Fuel level sensor
Oil renewal solenoid
Check for any of the following active event codes:
E072 Low Oil Level Mark
E073 Oil Filter Differential Pressure High
E074 Oil Filter Differential Pressure Very HighExpected Result:There are no active diagnostic codes for the sensors listed above. None of the event codes listed above are active. Results:
OK - There is an active 2271 diagnostic code. Or, there is an active E2089 event code. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There are active diagnostic codes or there are active event codes.Repair: Repair any active codes that are present. Refer to the appropriate topic in this Troubleshooting Manual. Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Location of ECM connectors
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connector J2/P2. Inspect the connector for the engine oil renewal solenoid. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.

P2 ECM connector (P2-11) Engine oil renewal solenoid + (P2-21) Engine oil renewal solenoid -
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 3. Check the Voltage at the Engine Oil Renewal Solenoid
Disconnect the connector for the engine oil renewal solenoid.
Connect a voltmeter between pin 1 and pin 2 on the connector for the engine oil renewal solenoid.
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Start Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Select the override for the engine oil renewal solenoid on Cat ET.
Set the override for the engine oil renewal solenoid to 100 percent.
Measure the voltage between terminal 1 and terminal 2 at the solenoid connector.
Deactivate the override for the engine oil renewal solenoid.Expected Result:The voltage is approximately 24 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage is approximately 24 VDC. Voltage is present at the connector.Repair: The voltage is reaching the solenoid. Check the mechanical operation of the solenoid. If the engine oil renewal solenoid is suspected of being the problem, temporarily replace the engine oil renewal solenoid. If the problem is no longer present, reinstall the old engine oil renewal solenoid. If the problem returns, replace the engine oil renewal solenoid.STOP
Not OK - The voltage is not 24 VDC. The voltage is not present at the connector. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check the Voltage at the ECM
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove wire F708-YL from terminal P2-11 at ECM connector J2/P2. Install a wire jumper into the socket for P2-11.
Remove wire 998-BR from terminal P2-21 at ECM connector J2/P2. Install a wire jumper into the socket for P2-21.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Select the override for the engine oil renewal solenoid on Cat ET.
Set the override for the engine oil renewal solenoid to 100 percent.
Measure the voltage between the wire jumper in P2-11 and the wire jumper in P2-21.
Deactivate the override for the engine oil renewal solenoid.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove the jumper wires and reconnect all wires.Expected Result:The voltage is approximately 24 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage is approximately 24 VDC. The voltage is correct. Check for an open circuit or excessive resistance in the harness between the ECM and the connector for the engine oil renewal solenoid. Check for a short circuit between
