Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the filler cap on the hydraulic oil tank only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Be sure all the hydraulic pressure is released before any fittings, hoses or components are loosened, tightened, removed or adjusted.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) or refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. INHALING REFRIGERANT R-12 OR REFRIGERANT R-134A THROUGH ANY SMOKING MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE, CAN GENERATE LETHAL PHOSGENE GAS AND CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS OR DEATH. ALSO, HEAT MUST NEVER BE APPLIED TO A CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
1. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664, "Air Conditioning And Heating Systems With R-134a Refrigerant" and Special Publication, NEDG5065, "Air Conditioning Tools" for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to charge the air conditioning system in any Caterpillar machine.2. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly loosening the filler cap on the radiator. Drain the coolant from the radiator in a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the cooling system is 183 liters (47.6 U.S. gal).3. Release the pressure in the hydraulic systems as follows: a. Lower the implements to the ground.b. Shut off the engine.c. Move the control levers through the full range of travel. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the implement hydraulic system.d. Move the STIC Steering Control to the "Left and Right" position. This will release any pressure that may be present in the steering system.e. Pump the brake pedal several times. This will release any pressure that may be present in the brake system.f. Carefully loosen the filler cap on the implement and brake hydraulic oil tank to release the pressure.g. Carefully loosen the filler cap on the steering and fan hydraulicoil tank to release the pressure.h. Tighten the filler caps on both hydraulic oil tanks.i. The pressure in the hydraulic systems has now been released. Lines and components can be removed. 4. Support radiator guard assembly hood (2) with Tooling (A) and a suitable hoist and chains.5. Remove bolts (1). 6. Remove eight bolts (3) (four at each front corner of radiator guard assembly. 7. Remove radiator guard assembly hood (1) and engine enclosure support panel (4) with hoist, chains and Tooling (A). The weight of the radiator guard assembly hood (1) and engine enclosure support panel (4) is 68 kg (150 lb). 8. Remove three bolts (5) and cover (6) to gain access to air conditioning condenser hose connections. 9. Disconnect two air conditioning hoses (7) and two hydraulic oil cooler hoses (8) and (12). Cap and plug open connections.10. Disconnect coolant tube assemblies (9), (10) and (11) from the radiator and engine. Remove coolant tube assemblies (9), (10) and (11). 11. Disconnect four hydraulic hose assemblies (13) from fan drive motor. Cap and plug open connections. 12. Remove bolts and angled brackets (14) that hold hose assemblies to fan guard. Place hose assemblies aside out of the way of fan guards. 13. Remove two bolts (16) and place receptacle assembly (15) aside out of the way of the fan guards. 14. Remove center section of fan guard (17) from each side of the fan guard assembly. 15. Secure Tooling (A) to fan group. Attach a hoist and chains to Tooling (A) as shown.16. Remove four bolts (18) that hold upper fan guard (19) to radiator guard assembly (20). Repeat four lower fan guard. 17. Remove eight bolts (21) (two at each corner) that hold the fan group (22) to the radiator guard assembly (20).
Use care not to damage the air conditioner condenser core and hydraulic oil cooler cores during removal of the
