Introduction
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instructions until you have read the information and you understand the information. This special instruction outlines best practices for Caterpillar large engines with HLA systems installed. The special instructions intent is to provide one source of information for correctly installing, resetting, and Troubleshooting Caterpillar large engines with HLA installed. The special instruction includes:
Explanation of issues that can be found with HLA and how to resolve those issues.
HLA Components and Functionality.
Procedure to fill the HLA correctly, including a link to a video of the procedure.
Rework procedure for C175 valve adjustment.Safety Section
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person must also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance of a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Avoid using a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar. If used, ensure the safety of the operating personnel and others.Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures.Operation of the machine and the maintenance of the machine must not occur unless the instructions and warnings in the machines Operation and Maintenance Manual have been read and the instructions and the warnings are understood.
Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment. To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

Clacking or Ticking Noise
One issue that has been observed is a clacking or ticking noise. This noise can be observed when the engine is at idle. A best practice is for the operator or technician to listen for the noise during any of the following:- PMs- Daily walk around- Start/end of shift

https://channel1.videonitch.com/LearningPrograms/Pass/3748?CategoryID=456 Note: This video outlines how to set the 3500 version of HLA. The last 30 seconds of the video give examples of an engine making the ticking noise, and one not making the noise. The ticking HLA should be identified and replaced. The next section of the Special Instruction outlines what causes the ticking noise, HLA pump down.HLA Pump Down or Collapsing
The following information outlines the 3500 HLA system and how HLA works. The C175 system works and looks similar. The explanation of HLA collapsing uses 3500 illustrations as an example. The issue can also occur with a C175, and will behave in the same manner. The HLA can lose oil pressure in the high-pressure chamber. This action can be described as the HLA collapsing or becoming spongy. This issue can be caused by the engine not running for while.HLA System & New Content
