Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes for the Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD ) Ignition System
J1939 Code Description Comments
3484-0 Aftertreatment #1 Ignition : High - most severe (3) The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects the following conditions:
The ARD glow plug voltage is greater than 12 VDC for at least 3 seconds
The ECM has been powered for at least 2 seconds.
There are no active 168 diagnostic codes.
The warning lamp will come on.
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration will be disabled.
The code will be reset if voltage drops below 11 VDC for 0.5 seconds.
3484-4 Aftertreatment #1 Ignition : Voltage Below Normal The ECM detects the following conditions:
The ARD glow plug voltage is less than 9.7 VDC for at least 11 second.
The ECM has been powered for at least 2 seconds.
There are no active 168 diagnostic codes.
The warning lamp will come on.
The code will reset when the keyswitch is cycled or once 10 minutes have passed since glow plug was disabled. The ECM operates the ARD glow plug by activating the ARD glow plug relay. The voltage is supplied to the ARD glow plug through a resistor which reduces the voltage to the ideal operating range for the glow plug. The ideal operating range is 10.7 to 11.5 VDC.If battery voltage is supplied directly to the ARD glow plug without the resistor, a 3484-0 will become active. If there is an open circuit and the ARD glow plug is not receiving the correct operating voltage, a 3484-4 diagnostic code will become active.

Table 2
J1939 Code Description Comments
168-0 Battery Potential / Power Input #1 : High - most severe (3) The ECM detects the following conditions:
The battery supply voltage is greater than 16.5 VDC for at least 0.5 seconds.
The keyswitch has been ON for at least 2 seconds.
The warning lamp will flash and the shutdown lamp will come on.
The engine will stop and the engine will not restart as long as this condition exists.
The ECM is unable to control the fuel rack solenoid at this system voltage. Results:
OK - No associated diagnostic trouble code is present. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - Associated diagnostic trouble code is present. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Trouble Codes" to troubleshoot the associated diagnostic code.STOPTest Step 2. Check ARD Ignition system
Confirm that the ARD glow plug wiring is connected to the correct relay and correct pins on ECM. Refer to the appropriate Electrical Schematic.
Confirm that the ARD glow plug wiring is not damaged which can cause a short circuit.
Confirm that the Alternator is charging.
Confirm that the ARD glow plug fuse has not blown.
Ensure that the ARD glow plug tightening torque in the ARD head is 23 N m (17 lb ft).
Ensure that the ARD glow plug nut tightening torque is 1.5 N m (1.1 lb ft).
Use electronic service tool to override the ARD glow plug and check that the glow plug relay is operating correctly.
Use electronic service tool to override the ARD glow plug and check that the voltage drop over the dropping resistor is 2V.
Use electronic service tool to override the ARD glow plug and check that the glow plug heats up (should visibly glow). Results:
OK - All connectors, pins, and sockets are correctly coupled and/or inserted. The harness and connectors are free of corrosion, abrasion, and pinch points. The fuses are OK. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - There is a fault with the harness and connectors.Repair: Perform the following repair:
Repair the connectors or the harness and/or replace the connectors or the harness. Ensure that all the seals are correctly in place and ensure that the connectors are correctly connected.
Confirm that the fault has been eliminated.STOPTest Step 3. Check the Batteries
Confirm that the battery voltage is greater than 13 VDC during regeneration of the DPF with all the engine auxiliary components activated. Results:
OK - The batteries pass the test. The measured voltage is greater than 13 VDC.STOP
NOT OK - The batteries do not pass the test. The measured voltage is less than 13 VDC.Repair: Recharge or replace the faulty batteries.Use the electronic service tool to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.STOP
