Information:
Test the Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) concentration or have the SCA concentration tested as part of an S O S Coolant Analysis.Test For SCA Concentration
Coolant/Antifreeze and SCA
Do not exceed the recommended six percent supplemental coolant additive concentration.
Use the 8T-5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit or use the 4C-9301 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit in order to check the concentration of the SCA. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Specifications" in the Maintenance Section for more information on conventional coolant/antifreeze cooling system maintenance.S O S Coolant Analysis
S O S coolant samples can be analyzed at your Caterpillar dealer. S O S Coolant Analysis is a program that is based on periodic samples.Level I
Level I is a basic analysis of the coolant. The following items are tested:* Glycol Concentration* Concentration of SCA* pH* ConductivityThe results are reported, and recommendations are made according to the results. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for information on the benefits of managing your equipment with an S O S Coolant Analysis.Add The SCA, If Necessary
Do not exceed the recommended amount of supplemental coolant additive concentration. Excessive supplemental coolant additive concentration can form deposits on the higher temperature surfaces of the cooling system, reducing the engine's heat transfer characteristics. Reduced heat transfer could cause cracking of the cylinder head and other high temperature components. Excessive supplemental coolant additive concentration could also result in radiator tube blockage, overheating, and/or accelerated water pump seal wear. Never use both liquid supplemental coolant additive and the spin-on element (if equipped) at the same time. The use of those additives together could result in supplemental coolant additive concentration exceeding the recommended maximum.
Pressurized System: Hot coolant can cause serious burns. To open the cooling system filler cap, stop the engine and wait until the cooling system components are cool. Loosen the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure.
1. Slowly loosen the cooling system filler cap in order to relieve the pressure. Remove the cooling system filler cap. Always discard drained fluids according to local regulations.2. If necessary, drain some coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container in order to allow space for the extra SCA.3. Add the proper amount of SCA. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Specifications" in the Maintenance Section for more information on SCA requirements.4. Clean the cooling system filler cap. Inspect the gaskets of the cooling system filler cap. If the gaskets are damaged, replace the old cooling system filler cap with a new cooling system filler cap. Install the cooling system filler cap.Replace The SCA Element (If Equipped)
To help prevent over inhibiting the engine's cooling system, never use both the supplemental coolant additive AND the supplemental coolant additive element (if equipped) at the same time.
(1) Inlet valve. (2) Outlet valve. (3) Element.1. Close inlet valve (1) and outlet valve (2). Remove and discard used element (3).2. Clean the element mounting base. Ensure all of the old gasket is removed.3. Install the proper element for your cooling system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Specifications" in the Maintenance Section for more information on SCA requirements. Coat the gasket of the new element with a thin film of coolant. Install the element. Install the element until the gasket contacts the base, then tighten 3/4 turn (270 degrees) more by hand. Do not overtighten.4. Open inlet valve (1) and outlet valve (2)5. Remove the cooling system filler cap. Start the engine and check for leaks. Allow the coolant level to stabilize.6. Add the proper premixed coolant/water, if necessary, to bring the coolant to within 13 mm (.5 inch) below the bottom of the fill pipe or to the proper level on the sight glass (if equipped).7. Install the cooling system filler cap.
