Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
1-5 Cylinder #1 Injector : Current Below Normal The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit. The ECM monitors the current flow through the circuit for each injector solenoid. If low current flow (open circuit) is detected, a diagnostic code is activated. The ECM continues to try to fire the injector. If high current flow (short circuit) is detected, a diagnostic code is activated. The ECM will disable the solenoid circuit in order to prevent damage from the high current flow. However, the ECM will periodically try to fire the injector. If the short circuit remains, this sequence of events will be repeated until the problem is corrected.
1-6 Cylinder #1 Injector : Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short circuit.
2-5 Cylinder #2 Injector : Current Below Normal The ECM detects an open circuit.
2-6 Cylinder #2 Injector : Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short circuit.
3-5 Cylinder #3 Injector : Current Below Normal The ECM detects an open circuit.
3-6 Cylinder #3 Injector : Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short circuit.
4-5 Cylinder #4 Injector : Current Below Normal The ECM detects an open circuit.
4-6 Cylinder #4 Injector : Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short circuit.
5-5 Cylinder #5 Injector : Current Below Normal The ECM detects an open circuit.
5-6 Cylinder #5 Injector : Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short circuit.
6-5 Cylinder #6 Injector : Current Below Normal The ECM detects an open circuit.
6-6 Cylinder #6 Injector : Current Above Normal The ECM detects a short circuit.
1-2 Cylinder #1 Injector : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Data from the electronic unit injector is out of limits. The code is logged.
The ECM will continue to energize the injector solenoid.
1-7 Cylinder #1 Injector : Not Responding Properly The electronic unit injector is no longer capable of delivering the correct amount of fuel.
2-2 CCylinder #2 Injector : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Data from the electronic unit injector is out of limits.
2-7 Cylinder #2 Injector : Not Responding Properly The electronic unit injector is no longer capable of delivering the correct amount of fuel.
3-2 Cylinder #3 Injector : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Data from the electronic unit injector is out of limits.
3-7 Cylinder #3 Injector : Not Responding Properly The electronic unit injector is no longer capable of delivering the correct amount of fuel.
4-2 Cylinder #4 Injector : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Data from the electronic unit injector is out of limits.
4-7 Cylinder #4 Injector : Not Responding Properly The electronic unit injector is no longer capable of delivering the correct amount of fuel.
5-2 Cylinder #5 Injector : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Data from the electronic unit injector is out of limits.
5-7 Cylinder #5 Injector : Not Responding Properly The electronic unit injector is no longer capable of delivering the correct amount of fuel.
6-2 Cylinder #6 Injector : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Data from the electronic unit injector is out of limits.
6-7 Cylinder #6 Injector : Not Responding Properly The electronic unit injector is no longer capable of delivering the correct amount of fuel. Background InformationTypically, problems with an injector solenoid occur when the engine is warmed up and/or when the engine is under vibration (heavy loads). Perform this procedure when the engine is at normal operating temperature. Pay careful attention to the condition of the wiring and the connectors as you perform this procedure. The wiring and/or the connectors may have problems that only occur during vibration. These engines have Electronic Unit Injectors (EUI) that are electronically controlled. Each injector contains a solenoid. The ECM sends 105 volt pulses to each injector solenoid. The pulses are sent at the proper time and at the correct duration for a given engine load and speed.Cooling of the Injector SolenoidsEach injector solenoid is cooled by a stream of oil. The stream of oil exits from a hole in the exhaust valve rocker arm. The stream of oil must be checked whenever an injector is replaced.Diagnostic Tests on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)Cat ET includes the following test that aids in troubleshooting injector solenoids:Injector Solenoid Test - This test identifies an open circuit or a short circuit in the circuits for the injector solenoids. The test is performed while the engine is not running. The "Injector Solenoid Test" briefly activates each solenoid. A good solenoid will create an audible click when the solenoid is activated. Cat ET indicates the status of the solenoid as "OK", "Open", or "Short".Fuel System Verification Test - This test evaluates the health of each injector. This test will determine if an injector needs to be replaced. When the test is performed, Cat ET indicates the status of each injector as "Success" or "Failed". Perform the test immediately after replacing an injector. Also, perform this test if a -2 code or a -7 code is active.Note: The "Fuel System Verification Test" must be performed when the engine is running and the coolant temperature is above 65° C (149° F).Note: Refer to the following schematic. Two injector solenoids share a common supply wire. For this reason, an open circuit or a short circuit in a supply wire could cause diagnostic codes for two cylinders.

Test Step 1. DETERMINE THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Establish communication between Cat ET and the engine ECM. Cat ET must be communicating on both data links in order to perform this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
Determine the diagnostic trouble code that relates to an injector. Expected Result:A -2 code or a -7 code is present. Results:
A -2 code or a -7 code is present. - Repair: Perform the following procedure:
Do not clear the diagnostic trouble code.

Accessing the Fuel System Verification Test
Perform the Fuel System Verification Test. Cat ET will clear the code when the test begins. If the injector passes the test, the injector is okay. STOP.If the injector fails the test, proceed to Test Step 10.
A -5 code or a -6 code is
