Information:

The engine is equipped with an air filter restriction switch. The type of switch that is installed can be a "Normally Open" switch or a "Normally Closed" switch.Use the electronic service tool to check the configuration parameters in order to check the type of air filter restriction switch that is installed.
Table 2
Diagnostic Summary for a "Normally Open" Air Filter Restriction Switch
Engine Condition Switch State Active Diagnostic Code
Not running (key on) Open Normal condition
Running Open Normal Condition (no air filter restriction detected)
Not running (key on) Closed 582-4
Running Closed E583-1 or E583-2 (air filter restriction detected)
Table 3
Diagnostic Summary for a "Normally Closed" Air Filter Restriction Switch
Engine Condition Switch State Active Diagnostic Code
Not running (key on) Closed Normal condition
Running Closed Normal Condition (no air filter restriction detected)
Not running (key on) Open 582-3
Running Open 107-15 (E583-1) or 107-16 (E583-2) (air filter restriction detected) Note: A 107-15 (E583-1) or a 107-16 (E583-2) diagnostic code indicates that the air inlet is restricted. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Is Restricted".Note: Refer to the Electrical Schematic for the application while performing this procedure.
Table 4
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
A. Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
B. Thoroughly inspect the ECM connector J1/P1. Inspect all of the other connectors for the circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
D. Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the correct torque of 5 N m (44 lb in).
E. Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.
Loose connection or damaged wire
Result: There is a fault in a connector or the wiring.
Repair: Repair any faulty connectors or replace the wiring harness. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are correctly coupled.
Result: The harness and wiring are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check for Active or Logged Diagnostic Codes
A. Verify that the keyswitch is in the OFF position.
B. Connect the electronic service tool to the diagnostic connector.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Check for active or logged diagnostic codes that are listed in Table 1.
Diagnostic codes
Result: No diagnostic codes are present.
There may be an intermittent fault in an electrical component between the ECM and the harness connector for the air filter restriction switch. The fault may be inside an electrical connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" in order to identify intermittent faults.
Result: A 582-4 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: A 582-3 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
3. Create an Open Circuit at the Switch Connector
A. Verify that the keyswitch is in the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the harness connector from the air filter restriction switch.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Use the electronic service too to check for active diagnostic codes. Wait at least 10 seconds for activation of the diagnostic codes.
E. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Diagnostic codes
Result: A 582-4 diagnostic code was previously active. The diagnostic code disappears with the switch disconnected.
Repair: Install a replacement switch.
Result: The 582-4 diagnostic code is still active.
There is a fault in the wiring for the air filter restriction switch
Repair: Repair the faulty wiring or replace the faulty wiring.
Use the electronic service tool to clear all logged diagnostic codes and verify that the repair eliminates the fault.
If the repair did not eliminate the fault, contact the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
4. Create a Short Circuit at the Switch Connector
A. Verify that the keyswitch is in the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the harness connector from the air filter restriction switch.
C. Fabricate a jumper wire that is 150 mm (6 inch) long. Crimp a terminal to both ends of the wire.
D. Use the jumper to connect terminal 1 to terminal 2 on the harness connector.
E. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
F. Use the electronic service too to check for an active diagnostic code. Wait at least 10 seconds for activation of the diagnostic codes.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position and then remove the jumper wire.
Diagnostic codes
Result: A 582-3 diagnostic code was previously active. The diagnostic code disappears with the switch disconnected.
Repair: Install a replacement air filter restriction switch.
Result: The 582-3 diagnostic code is still active.
