6V-2197 Transducer
7X-1695 Cable
7X-1171 Transducer Adapter Test Step 1. Install the 7X-1171 Transducer Adapter
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Put the No. 1 piston or the No. 6 piston at the top center position. For instructions, refer to the engine's Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Finding Top Center Position for No. 1 Piston". After the top center position has been located, rotate the engine in the opposite direction of normal engine rotation for 60 degrees.Note: Normal engine rotation is counterclockwise as the engine is viewed from the flywheel end. Refer to Illustration 1 and Illustration 2.
Remove the timing calibration plug from the cylinder block. 3176C and 3196 EnginesIf the 3176C and 3196 engines are viewed from the flywheel end of the engine, the timing calibration plug is located on the right side in the No. 4 cylinder rod pocket. Refer to Illustration 1. 3406E and 3456 EnginesIf the 3406E and 3456 engines are viewed from the flywheel end of the engine, the timing calibration plug is located on the left side in the No. 2 cylinder rod pocket. Refer to Illustration 2.
Install the 7X-1171 Transducer Adapter into the hole for the plug. Results:
OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. Install the 6V-2197 Transducer
If the crankshaft is not in the correct position when the 6V-2197 Transducer is installed, the probe will be damaged when the engine is started.
Install a 2D-6392 O-Ring Seal on the end of the 6V-2197 Transducer . To slide the O-ring seal onto the transducer more easily, apply clean engine oil to the O-ring seal.
Push the transducer through the 7X-1171 Transducer Adapter until the transducer contacts the outermost portion of the crankshaft counterweight.
Withdraw the transducer 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) and hand tighten the nut on the adapter sleeve in order to secure the transducer. Move the O-ring seal downward against the adapter.
Connect the 7X-1695 Cable to the transducer. Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 3. Connect the 7X-1695 Cable to the P400 Timing Calibration Plug Connector
If the engine's ECM is already equipped with a P400 timing calibration plug connector, connect the 7X-1695 Cable to the P400 connector.Note: If the engine's ECM is not equipped with a P400 timing calibration plug connector, you will need to install one. Results:
OK - The engine is already equipped with a P400 connector and the connection has been made. Proceed to 5.
Not OK - The engine is not equipped with a P400 connector. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Install the P400 Timing Calibration Plug Connector

170-3519 Harness
Disconnect the ECM P2 connector. Remove the sealing plugs from P2:22 (Timing Calibration Positive) and from P2:23 (Timing Calibration Negative).Do not discard the sealing plugs. The sealing plugs may be reinstalled when the timing calibration procedure is complete.
Install the white wire of the 170-3519 Harness into P2:22 (Timing Calibration Positive).
Install the yellow wire of the 170-3519 Harness into P2:23 (Negative Timing Calibration).Note: Ensure that the wires are installed into the correct connector terminal. Engine performance will be adversely affected if the polarity of the wires is reversed.
Reconnect the P2 connector to the J2 connector. Tighten the connector to 6.0 N m (55 lb in).
Connect the 7X-1695 Cable to the 170-3519 Harness .Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 5. Start the Engine and Check for Diagnostic Codes
Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
Start the engine and run the engine at low idle until the engine is at the correct operating temperature.
Check for active diagnostic codes. The engine must not have any active diagnostic codes during the timing calibration except for a 261-13 Engine Timing Calibration required.Expected Result:There are no active diagnostic codes or there is only an active 261-13.Results:
OK - There are no active diagnostic codes or there is only an active 261-13. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - There is at least one active code that is not 261-13.Repair: Use the procedures in this manual to troubleshoot and repair any active diagnostic codes before attempting the c
