Table 1
Event Code
J1939 Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
110-0 Engine Coolant Temperature : High - most severe (3) The engine coolant temperature is above the trip point temperature for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The engine is shut down.
110-15 Engine Coolant Temperature : High - least severe (1) The code is logged.
Engine power is derated.
110-16 Engine Coolant Temperature : High - moderate severity (2) The code is logged. If the engine is shut down due to a high coolant temperature, the power to the ECM must be cycled before the engine is restarted.Probable Causes
Cooling system leaks
Heat Exchanger
Coolant temperature sensor and/or circuit
Faulty temperature regulator
Faulty coolant pumpRecommended Actions
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
110-0
110-15
110-16
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 110 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Low Coolant Level
A. Inspect the coolant level. If necessary, add coolant.
Level
Result: The coolant level is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The coolant level is NOT OK.
Repair: Add coolant. Check for leaks.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Check the Cooling System for Leaks
A. Inspect the coolant for presence of bubbles.
Level
Result: No evidence of coolant leaks is discovered..
Proceed to the next step.
Result: Combustion gasses have been discovered in the cooling system..
Repair: Inspect the cylinder liners for cracks.
Perform any necessary repairs.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
2. Check the Heat Exchanger for Problems
A. Check the cooling fins on the heat exchanger for dirt and/or for debris.
B. Check for sufficient flow and temperature of the cooling water through the heat exchanger.
Heat Exchanger Result: The heat exchanger is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: A problem with the heat exchanger has been discovered.
3. Check the Coolant Temperature Sensor and/or the Circuit
A. Check the reading of the coolant temperature on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). The temperature should rise steadily as the engine is warmed. Ensure that the temperature is reasonable.
Coolant Temperature Sensor Result: The temperature sensor is working properly.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The temperature sensor is not working properly.
Troubleshoot the circuit and the coolant temperature sensor.
4. Check the Condition of the Water Temperature Regulator and/or Pressure Relief
A. Pressure-test the cooling system. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for the correct procedure.
B. Check that the seating surfaces of the pressure relief valve and the radiator cap are clean and undamaged.
C. Check operation of the pressure relief valve and/or the water temperature regulator.
Temperature Regulator Result: The pressure relief valve and/or the water temperature regulator are operating properly.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The pressure relief valve and/or the water temperature regulator are not operating properly.
Clean the components and/or replace the components.
5. Inspect the Coolant Pump
A. Inspect the impeller of the coolant pump for damage and/or erosion.
B. Ensure that the drive gear is not loose on the drive shaft of the coolant pump.
Coolant Pump Result A problem with the coolant pump has been discovered.
Repair or replace the coolant pump.
