Information:

1. Remove the bolts that hold bracket (1) in position. Remove bracket (1) and the spacer.2. Fasten a hoist to the fan and fan drive. It will be necessary to remove the engine lifting bracket from the front of the cylinder head to install tooling (A).3. Remove the bolts that hold fan drive bracket (2) to the front of the engine.3. Install tool (A) as shown. Use tool (A) as a support for the fan and fan drive.
Make sure the fan does not cause damage to the radiator core when the fan drive is fastened to tool (A).
4. Remove bolts (3) that hold the elbow to the cylinder head. 5. Remove the bolt and clip (4) that holds the water temperature send unit line to the cylinder head.6. Disconnect water temperature sending unit (5) from the cylinder head. 7. Remove bolt (8) and the spacer. Remove bolts (7) that hold the air conditioner compressor bracket (6) to the cylinder head. Turn the air conditioner compressor bracket (6) away from the cylinder head. 8. Remove the bolt and clip (12). Remove line (11).9. Remove the bolts that hold the intake elbow in position. Remove intake elbow (9).10. Disconnect the wires from the glow plugs and remove wire harness (10). 11. Use 4B5276 Washers (13) [part of tooling (B)] as needed to have clearance between the 6V2157 Link Bracket and the valve spring retainer. Install tooling (B) on the rear of the cylinder head. 12. Install tool (C) on the front of the cylinder head and fasten a hoist to tool (C) and tooling (B). Remove bolts (14) that hold the cylinder head in place.
Do not put the cylinder head down on a flat surface. This can cause damage to the fuel injection valves.
13. Remove cylinder head (15). The weight is 220 lb. (99 kg).14. Remove the old cylinder head gasket. Do Step 14 and the note for engine that has a spacer plate. 15. Remove water ferrules (16) and O-ring seal (17). Always install a new gasket between the spacer plate and cylinder block before the cylinder head is installed. See REMOVE SPACER PLATE. Do Step 1 and the NOTE for engines that have a spacer plate. Be sure a new gasket has been installed between spacer plate and cylinder block. See INSTALL SPACER PLATE. 1. Thoroughly clean the spacer plate and bottom surface of the cylinder head. Install new water ferrules (1) and O-ring seal (2) on the hollow dowel. 2. Install a new head gasket (4).3. Install tool (A) to the front of the cylinder head. Use 4B5276 Washers [part of tooling (B)] as needed to have clearance between the 6V2157 Link Bracket and the valve spring retainer. Install tooling (B) on the rear of the cylinder head and fasten a hoist to tool (A) and tooling (B). 4. Put cylinder head (3) in position as shown.5. Install push rods (8) and put rocker shaft (5) in position on the cylinder head. See INSTALL ROCKER SHAFT AND PUSH RODS.6. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the cylinder head and rocker shaft bolts (6). Install the bolts and washers and tighten the bolts as follows: Step 1. Tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 155 N m (115 lb.ft.).Step 2. Again tighten all bolts in number sequence to a torque of 250 17 N m (185 13 lb.ft.).Step 3. Again tighten all bolts in number sequence (hand torque only) to a torque of 250 17 N m (185 13 lb.ft.).Step 4. Tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 30 N m (22 lb.ft.).Step 5. Again tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.).Step 6. Again tighten all bolts in letter sequence to a torque of 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.). Make an adjustment of the valves to have a clearance of 0.38 mm (.015 in.) for the intake and 0.64 mm (.025 in.) for the exhaust. See VALVE CLEARANCE in TESTING AND ADJUSTING. If necessary, loosen the bolts that hold the water pump in place.7. Put the gasket in place and install the two bolts that hold water pump elbow (7) to the cylinder head. 8. Put intake elbow (9) in position on the cylinder head. Put the clips in their original places and install the bolts that hold the clips and intake elbow (9) in place. 9. Install line (11). Install clip (12).10. Install wire harness (10) and connect the wires to the glow plugs. 11. Put air conditioner compressor bracket (13) in position on the cylinder head and install bolts (14). Install spacers and bolt (15). 12. Connect water temperature sending unit (17) to the cylinder head.13. Install clip (18) and bolt (16) that holds the water temperature line to the cylinder head.14. Put the fan and fan drive in position against the front of the engine. Remove tool (C) and install the four bolts that hold the fan drive in position. 15. Install engine lifting bracket (19).16.
